Where to study art in Italy
Today, art education in Italy is taught in schools of three levels:
- Schools and art institutes, which train masters and leaders in the field of art. An art school is the first class or junior level of an art institute, but it can also exist independently and autonomously. Here, the student is required not only to work in a studio, but also to gain academic knowledge in art and general subjects. Today Italy has 6 art institutes, 10 institutes of industrial art and arts-and-crafts schools, 15 schools of applied art, 25 vocational schools, and 2 specialized schools (for alabaster in Volterra, for coral engraving in Torre del Greco).
- Higher art schools. They are four-year programs; there are 8 of them in the country in total. In addition to art disciplines, general culture subjects are taught, and upon completion of the course a diploma of higher art education is awarded. These schools consist of two departments, whose goals are: 1) preparation for admission to the academy of fine arts, 2) preparation for admission to higher architectural institutes and for qualifying examinations to teach drawing in secondary and vocational schools.
- Academies of Fine Arts. There are 9 of them in Italy: their task is to prepare students for the practice of art through attending and working in a studio. They include four-year courses in painting, sculpture, and decorative and applied arts (some — also in set design). Teaching of these subjects may be carried out by full-time professors or even (on a private basis) by masters of art (recognized by the Ministry), who are provided with free use of a studio for these purposes.
- Music education. It is taught at the royal music conservatories of Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Parma, and Rome (the latter also has a school of acting). Each conservatory, as a rule, in addition to schools of composition and singing, has schools for individual musical instruments. The solfège course is common to all schools. In certain schools, teaching is divided into 2 or 3 periods. Admission to the first course of the first period requires a transfer from the 5th primary class; admission to any other course within a school requires passing a qualifying examination. There are also 10 secondary music schools.
In all major cities — Florence, Bologna, Venice, Milan, and Naples — Italian art schools for international students operate:
- IED Rome European Institute of Design,
- Istituto Marangoni Florence,
- St. Stephen's School,
- Florence University of Arts Summer School,
- Gentium Schola Opitergium (International School of Talents).
All schools guarantee excellent quality of education. Studying design in Italy provides professional knowledge through lectures and seminars, but more importantly, all theory is supported by practice. Students attend masterclasses and carry out projects in collaboration with well-known Italian brands: Alfa Romeo, Bulgari, Diesel, Fendi, etc. The schools are equipped with modern studios for completing practical assignments and realizing creative and professional potential under the guidance of highly qualified instructors. In addition, students participate in research and restoration projects, gaining valuable experience.
