COVID is over, yet the issue of attendance in secondary schools remains, surprisingly, very acute. Detroit schools in the USA have proposed a radical measure: the «Perfect Attendance Pays» program («Perfect attendance is rewarded»). Now students who do not miss classes will receive $50–100 every week.
The main condition is no absences from Monday to Friday — every class every day counts. However, the program does not run all year: it typically covers the period from January through March, when particularly bad weather and cold season cause classrooms to empty out more than usual.
In middle school, a «perfect» week pays $50; in high school — $100. Miss a class without a valid excuse and you won't receive payment.
The program launched for the first time in the 2025/26 school year, and 12,800 students earned money at least once, while overall attendance dropped from 64% to 54% (among high schoolers).
