TOP-5 worst States for a comfortable life in the US

TOP-5 worst States for a comfortable life in the US

America, of course, is a modern, technologically advanced and advanced country, but not every state has such a characteristic, unfortunately. SMAPSE experts will tell you which regions are considered not the most suitable for life for several reasons.

States that even locals are ready to leave

Of course, if a state is on our list, this does not mean that it is completely unsuitable for life. Most likely, it simply does not have the lowest rates in terms of the number of crimes, and vice versa - it lags behind in terms of health care, the environment and general security. In addition to official statistics, SMAPSE experts will take into account the impression and feedback of people who have personally visited there and formed their own conclusions on this score.

  • Capital: Santa Fe
  • Population: just over 2 million

The region is located in the southwestern part of the country and borders Mexico. The state ranks 5th in the country in terms of land area, although the number of residents is small compared to other states, the population density is low. The climate is predominantly hot and dry, and water is often insufficient for full use. Moreover, water consumption is limited by law - the “water police” monitors compliance with the rules. Economically, the state is also sagging, as there are many expats (from Mexico) and people without work on the territory. By the way, the unemployment level is one of the highest in the country, which automatically contributes to the emergence of alcoholics and drug addicts. In 2016, New Mexico became the second most violent and the leader in crimes involving citizens' property. More than 22% of local children live in poverty. According to data for 2017, the state was in the 4th place in drug deaths.

  • Capital: Jackson
  • Population: about 3 million

A typical representative of the southern part of the country - the state is located in the Southeast of the United States. Elvis Presley was born and raised here, who became an unwitting legislator of junk food for local residents. The king of pop himself loved to eat peanut butter, bacon, or banana sandwiches. Perhaps this is why today Mississippi is the second most obese locals.
In 2017, the highest death rate in the country due to cardiovascular diseases was registered here. The state took second place in a similar ranking for cancer.
However, compared to New Mexico, Mississippi has a lower crime rate plus good air quality. The indigenous people of the state are conservative, religious (more than 60% of the population) and, as a result, think in dogmas of the past, they hardly accept new things, impose restrictions on the rights of citizens, which are openly recognized in other states of the country. The attitude towards foreign people is appropriate - not the most welcoming region for life.

  • Capital: Montgomery
  • Population: 5 million

One of the most famous American states - its name is heard due to the fact that it often appears in American films ("Forrest Gump") and songs ("Sweet home Alabama").

The region is located in the South-East of the country - next to the Mississippi. Here's what Alabama is anti-famous for:

  • The largest city in the state, Birmingham is one of the most dangerous in the country
  • The state has a high crime rate
  • Low level of health care - not enough hospitals and psychiatric hospitals
  • Residents of the state are not protected by the government from various types of discrimination.

Also, Alabama has a low level of education and high poverty of the population, which in total makes the region very unattractive for life. Of the advantages of the state - only the beautiful local nature.

  • Capital: Baton Rouge
  • Population: 4.5 million

The state also often finds itself in the list of the most uninhabitable regions - usually it falls into the TOP-3. And again this is the southern part of America (oh, it is not easy for them to live there, not easy).

The largest and most dynamic city in the state is not the capital, but New Orleans. As in the territory of the rest of the southern regions, there is a high percentage of religious people (mostly Catholics), which means conservative views on life. At the same time, the state has a good economy, because the main activity here is the extraction and processing of minerals. Louisiana is home to two strategically important national storage facilities, the headquarters of several oil and gas corporations.

Due to toxic production, the residents of the state are not the healthiest: they are more likely than other Americans to be exposed to obesity, infectious diseases, diabetes, and cancer. There is also a high level of child mortality and general crime.

It seems that to survive in Louisiana, you need to have special skills and an incredible thirst for life. Not everyone can do this, therefore, due to the listed factors, some of the local residents (about 16%) simply left their native state, leaving behind only houses with boarded up windows. At the same time, Louisiana has very beautiful nature, but not everyone will be ready to overcome the attendant difficulties in order to admire it.

  • Capital: Little Rock
  • Population: 2.3 million

This region is often ranked number one of the worst states in America for several reasons. Arkansas was once proudly called the "Land of Opportunity", but judging by modern statistics, the state's glorious past is long gone.

One of the reasons is partial (and only) support of citizens: local residents are protected from discrimination in matters of gender, race, religious beliefs and nationality. However, there is no government support against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status and age of residents.

The educational level of local residents is also not the highest - only 31% of them have higher education. And the average salary is slightly higher than 25,000 $ per year, which is very small by American standards.

Arkansas, in contrast to the previous state on the list, has its pluses - clean air at a good level and beautiful southern nature. Literally the entire geography of the country is located on the territory of the region - mountains, river valleys, forests and lakes. It has its own Hot Springs National Park.
