The deepest depressions are located in different parts of the oceans . They have not been fully studied by researchers and scientists. Oceanic Troughs are long and narrow topographic depressions on the seabed. The Pacific Ocean has about 50,000 km of converging plate boundaries, and most of the troughs are located in such places. We have TOP-10 of the deepest depressions.
Atacama
- Depth: 8065 m.
The Atacama Trench is also known as the Peru-Chile Trench. It defines the boundary between the sinking Nazca plate and the South American plate and is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean at a distance of 160 km from the coasts of Chile and Peru.
South Sandwich Trench
- Depth: 8,428 m.
Deep arcuate trench in the South Atlantic Ocean, formed by subduction and is the deepest trough in the Atlantic. The South Sandwich Islands, near the trench, constitute a volcanic island arc formed by an active volcano on Mount Belinda and Montagu Island.
Puerto Rico
- Depth: 8648 m.
The trench is located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Earthquakes occur in the zone, which provokes a tsunami. The trench is 800 km long and is the deepest point found in Milwaukee Deep, as well as the deepest trench in the Atlantic Ocean.
Japanese gutter
- Depth: 9000 m.
It is believed that the depression appeared when the oceanic Pacific plate sank beneath the Okhotsk plate. Tsunamis triggered by underwater earthquakes regularly indicate that the formation of the ocean floor continues.
Izu-Ogasawara
- Depth: 9780 m.
It is located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, stretching from Japan to the north, as well as on the continuation of the Japan Basin.
Kermadec
- Depth: 10,047m.
It was formed as a result of the immersion of the Pacific Plate under the Indo-Australian Plate, thousands of kilometers long parallel to the island arc. Has a very steep slope. The first descents into the trench were carried out in 2012 by deep sea explorers, where new species of giant amphipods were discovered.
Kuril-Kamchatka trench
- Depth: 10,500 m.
Also known as the Kuril Basin , formed as a result of underwater earthquakes that formed the Kuril island and volcanic arc. Zone of the largest earthquake in recent decades. Located off the southeastern coast of Kamchatka.
Philippine Trench
- Depth: 10,540 m.
The deepest point of the Philippine Trench, called the Galatea Deep , is located in the east of the Philippines. Formed as a result of the collision of tectonic plates.
Tonga
- Depth: 10,882 m
It is located in the South Pacific Ocean and is the second deepest point on Earth. Located in the northern part of the Kermadec Tonga subduction zone.
Mariana Trench
- Depth: 11,033 m.
The Earth has a radius, although not a perfect sphere, which is 25 km less at the poles than at the equator, so the Mariana Trench is not the closest point to the center of the Earth, but it is the deepest in the world.
