One of the official and popular English language proficiency tests, the TOEFL iBT, raises the cost in the European Union. ETS raises the tax on the sale of tests in European countries, but their competitors maintain the same prices.
The price increase was due to changes in the European Union's rules concerning taxes on online education services: while some distributors of English-language tests took over the taxes, ETS shifted the responsibility to those taking the TOEFL iBT. The additional amount for passing the test will depend on the tax systems of the countries: for example, those taking a language test in Germany will have to pay an additional $50, for those taking the test in France the price will rise by about $54, and in Sweden - by $80.
