Ostrava University

Ostrava University (abbreviated as OSU ) or Ostravská Univerzita v Ostravě is an educational institution of the state type that has been active in scientific and academic activities in the Czech Republic since early 1991. Currently OSU has its own small campus for students in the city of Ostrava.

The university uses Moodle to support both full-time and part-time study. Moodle courses used for regular classes are linked to subjects in STAG. When a course is created or updated, students registered for the corresponding subject are enrolled automatically. Separate project and supplementary courses are also available, including cybersecurity, business support, and copyright. Microsoft 365 supports study and work, and many instructors use MS Teams alongside their classes.

Students use the Moje Ostravská app to check their schedules, subjects, exam dates, and news, and to locate university buildings. It is available in the App Store and Google Play. Important messages are sent to students' university email accounts, which they must use when communicating with staff.

Every student must have at least one identification card. It serves as a library card, provides access to selected rooms and buildings, and confirms the holder's identity within the university. Full-time students in the medical faculty must have their faculty's card. They may also obtain an international student identity card, ISIC. Full-time students in other faculties choose either a standard student card or ISIC.

At the counseling and career center, tutors and advisors help students with academic and career questions. The Pyramida center supports those with special needs, while the international cooperation center provides information about study visits and internships. Graduates can access career advice, social and legal guidance, psychological counseling, and information about university gatherings, job openings, and further education.

The university has the following faculties:

The university also includes the Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling. The European Research Institute for Social Work (ERIS) operates within the Faculty of Social Studies.

In May 2019, the European Commission presented the University of Ostrava with the HR Excellence in Research Award in recognition of working conditions for researchers.

The Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling develops methods for working with imprecisely defined information. The theory of the fuzzy transform, or F-transform, originated at the institute. Its researchers have given lectures in more than 30 countries.

The institute's practical developments include:

• Linguistic Fuzzy Logic Controller, a software package that uses natural-language descriptions to control industrial processes,
• LFL Forecaster, software for analyzing and forecasting time series,
• LFL Miner, software that identifies relationships in large numerical databases and describes them in natural language,
• Computer vision methods, including data compression, image fusion and restoration, edge detection, reading damaged text, and object recognition,
• Lovec vážek, a mobile app that helps identify dragonfly species and share observations with specialists.

The institute helps organize ISCAMI student conferences and the Czech-Japan Seminar on Data Analysis and Decision Making under Uncertainty series. The European Research Institute for Social Work (ERIS) collaborates with eight universities in Finland, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom, along with other affiliated members across Europe.

• The Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling was founded in Ostrava in September 1996 through the Support for Research at Universities project of the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports,
• The seminar room at the medical faculty's Institute of Histology and Embryology bears the name of Associate Professor Vojtěch Kamarád.

The Jana Opletala student residences are in Slezská Ostrava, about a ten-minute walk from the city center.

Shops, restaurants, and sports facilities are nearby. Students can also visit the local zoo and the Landek mining museum, both a short distance away.

• OUpener is the official event marking the start of the academic year, welcoming students, staff, alumni, and the general public,
• The faculty of fine arts organizes concerts, exhibitions, festivals, lectures, and seminars. Many of these events are open to the general public,
• The student residences hold annual events with a long tradition, including Orientbier and Earth Hour.

This is the highest educational institution of the Czech Republic, which is among the best in the country - one of the top 20 institutions in the country. In addition, this university with ease from year to year defends its right to get into the ranking of the best - included in the TOP-5 percent of the most popular and sought-after universities in the world.

The university library's catalog includes books and other resources, and an interlibrary loan service is available. Czech and international e-books can be accessed through the university network or remotely.

The university maintains an archive of its own publications, with electronic versions available where licensing terms permit.

Galerie Student operates within the Faculty of Education. The information technology center manages and develops the university's information systems and communications infrastructure.

Identification card charges are as follows:

• A standard student card for students in faculties other than medicine costs 130 Kč,
• A basic student card for the medical faculty costs 100 Kč,
• An ISIC card costs 390 Kč and is available only to full-time students,
• The first card for a continuing education participant is free. A replacement for a lost or damaged card costs 130 Kč.

The fee for a student card must be paid in advance using a cashless payment method. Cash is not accepted.

The ISIC license for discounts is initially valid until the end of the calendar year in which the academic year of issue ends. It must then be renewed for each subsequent academic year.

Every year the first-year students receive a special admission committee. At the same time, local residents and visitors from different countries of the entire globe simultaneously apply for places in the institution. Students can choose the most convenient system of study for themselves - in person or remotely. The competition for admission is not so great - only three applicants apply for each student’s place.

Tuition fees at Ostrava University

Traditionally, for Czech higher education institutions, the academic year is divided into two semester-sized classes. At the same time, for each semester, students pay about $ 3,900. Students and teaching staff have access to the exchange program.
