Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is one of three universities created in Nigeria between 1961 and 1962 as a result of a report submitted by the commission chaired by Sir Eric Ashby, Master of Clare College (Cambridge), to the federal government in September 1960 to study the needs of secondary and higher education in Nigeria over the next twenty years.

OAU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
