Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU/NWPU) is a national institution of higher education managed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China. The University specializes in education and research in the field of aviation, astronautics, marine technology.
NPU was originally founded as the State Northwest Engineering Institute in Hanzhong in 1938. At that time, it became an association of educational organizations of engineering profile: Beiyang Institute, Peking University College, Northeastern University College, Jiaozuo Institute.
NPU was one of the first universities to open a graduate school and a national university science park – it now houses the Northwest Institute of Industrial Technology and China's largest UAV research and development base. As a key base for developing top-level talent through research and innovation, NPU was recognized by the National Union of Civilization and awarded the National Medal of Labor. Among his pioneering achievements are the first doctorates awarded in six academic disciplines, the first SUAV, the ekranoplan, the AUV and the on-board computer of a spacecraft in China.
Currently, about 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students study here. Disciplines for them are conducted by about 4300 teachers with high qualifications.
