New Zealand attracts foreign university graduates by issuing full-fledged work visas

For many students, studying abroad is not only a degree of international standard, but also an opportunity to gain their first professional experience in the country of study. That is why post-graduation employment rules often become one of the key factors when choosing a study destination.

New Zealand has decided to make this path clearer and more convenient: the authorities announced the launch of a new visa for graduates and an expansion of post-study employment opportunities. Starting November 16, New Zealand will introduce a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa, which will allow foreign graduates to remain in the country for an additional 6 months after completing their studies and work without being tied to a specific employer. The primary purpose of the visa is to give foreigners extra time to find a job and the opportunity to transition to long-term work status, for example, through the Accredited Employer Work Visa.

At the same time, the authorities are expanding the pool of graduates who will be eligible for the Post Study Work Visa. From November, students who have completed a Level 7 Graduate Diploma and already hold a bachelor's degree — obtained either in New Zealand or abroad — will be entitled to such a visa for up to one year. This will allow a greater number of foreign professionals to remain in the country after completing their studies and gain practical work experience.

For those planning to take advantage of the new program, timing is very important. Applications for the Short-term Graduate Work Visa can only be submitted within three months of the student visa expiring, so graduates should plan their next steps in advance and not leave the paperwork to the last minute.

The reform is part of the large-scale International Education Going for Growth strategy. The country has set ambitious goals: by 2034, to increase the number of international students by 35,000, and to nearly double the economic contribution of the education sector — to NZD 7.2 billion. Recent data shows that interest in the country is already growing. According to Education New Zealand, in 2025 the number of foreign students reached 92,580, which is 11% more than the previous year. New Zealand has already achieved one of its strategic goals well ahead of schedule — joining the top three most attractive study destinations among international applicants.
