Main reasons to choose a master's degree in the United States

Main reasons to choose a master's degree in the United States

In order to achieve successful career growth abroad, you must first get a good higher education. Bright prospects await foreigners in the United States, if they were able to graduate from the magistracy. It is such graduates who are interesting to international companies: employers are interested in competitive specialists and offer them the best places in the organization.

To graduate from the magistracy, you need to unlearn 1-2 years in one of the American universities. During this period, students should thoroughly study their future profile and apply the knowledge gained in practice. After receiving a diploma, they are already considered to be formed specialists.

According to the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), almost 15% of master's students (800 thousand people) are foreigners. University leaders encourage students abroad to study with them, attracting them with special study programs and motivating them with future prospects. For the United States, this is a way to attract high-quality specialists from various spheres of life, since a strict selection for admission immediately shows whether this student will benefit the country.

Americans are always glad to foreign students, since most often only those who have high academic potential and a strong base of scientific knowledge enter. Domestic education helps foreign students to pass a difficult competitive selection. At the same time, among Americans who have studied for a bachelor's degree, there are few applicants who want to go to the magistracy, which increases the chances of foreigners to enter.

Master's Degree Programs

The search for a suitable curriculum in one of the US universities should be approached 1-1.5 years before submitting documents. The search process takes a long time and consists of three-dimensional stages:

  • browsing the official websites of possible educational institutions of America,
  • analysis of the training programs provided by different universities,
  • business correspondence with coordinators (almost every university has a department for working with foreigners who want to enter it).

For those who wish to enroll in a master's program that is different from the profile when studying at the bachelor's degree, you need to attend preparatory courses and have the necessary score of the bachelor's degree (GPA).

Admission Requirements

A foreign university, including an American one, can enroll students who have already received a bachelor's degree in a domestic educational institution. Foreign students are required to pass standardized tests (the timing and their number depend on the university itself). Also, along with the diploma, it is necessary to pass the results of some major international exams:

  • TOEFL or IELTS (determine the level of English proficiency),
  • Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) (mandatory test for all programs and for every student, including Americans),
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) (test for admission to programs related to business and management),
  • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) (determination of the level of knowledge of professional medical terms for those wishing to study at medical universities),
  • Law School Admission Test (LSAT) (determination of the level of language proficiency in the field of legal sciences).

Preparation for submission of documents

A standard set of documents that foreign students need to enter American universities:

  • Bachelor's degree/ certificate of the date of expected graduation,
  • rating sheet,
  • A document indicating the average GPA score,
  • exam results on the level of English proficiency and specialized subjects,
  • resume
  • from 2 to 3 essays (motivation letters),
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation (most often from a teacher or employer and colleagues),
  • completed application form.

All collected documents are sent by registered mail. Also, during the entire period, it is necessary to prepare for exams, which is helped by programs such as Pre-Masters and Pathway.

Registration fees

In order to apply and become one of the candidates for admission, foreign students need to pay a registration fee (75-100 dollars). With self-admission, the payment for receiving educational services varies from 12 to 50 thousand dollars.

True, there are several ways of free education. Universities are ready to take on all material costs if they find a promising student. Thanks to his future research papers, the university hopes to raise its prestige rating and receive more funding from the state. So scholarships for the best undergraduates are paid off by the university in the future.

There are also two more ways: grant and credit. Not everyone can become the owner of a grant, but a loan for training is very widespread among students in the United States. However, there is a small nuance: an American bank can give a loan to a foreigner only if a legal US resident vouches for it.

Scholarships and grants

About 40% of foreigners use these two methods. There are two forms of scholarship at universities: Fellowship and Administrative Assistantship, or Teaching Assistantship. Plus the two most profitable grants: Fulbright Program and Tuition Scholarships.

During the training, students can work for more than 20 hours a week (during the holidays up to 40 hours). Also, after graduation, students are offered CPT and OPT internships with decent pay.
