KemSU was founded on January 1, 1974 on the basis of the Kemerovo State Pedagogical Institute, and has been the flagship university of Kuzbass since 2017.

KemSU is the founder and publisher of 9 periodical scientific journals and 3 online publications.

KemSU occupies the 814th position in the world ranking and the 84th position among Russian universities according to the results of the ranking of the world's leading universities.

KemSU is the only one of the Kuzbass universities that was among the winners of the Priority 2030 program.

KemSU is a member of the Vernadsky-Kuzbass consortium, is a regional venue for the Lomonosov Moscow State University Olympiads, the National Olympiad for Schoolchildren "Conquer the Sparrow Hills!", the Interdisciplinary Olympiad for Schoolchildren named after V.I. Vernadsky, the Kutafin Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Law, etc. 

The total number of the teaching staff of the university is 545 people, of which:

To accommodate nonresident students, KemSU has 9 dormitories within the city of Kemerovo:

• 3 corridor types;
• 1 block type;
• 3 hotel types.

The total number of seats is 4507. The dormitories are within walking distance from the educational buildings, dormitories No. 1 and No. 2 are connected by warm passages to each other and to the educational buildings. Students live in rooms for 2,3 and 4 people. The cost is from 550 to 810 rubles per month, depending on the type of dormitory.  

In dormitories No. 1, 2, 3, 7 there are automated washing machines for self-service, in hostel No. 2 there is a buffet and gyms, in No. 3 there is a centralized laundry. 

A catering complex has been organized, consisting of:

• 4 dining rooms;
• 5 cafes (a total of 585 seats);
• 2 coffee islands;
• 3 vending machines.

• rehearsal rooms of the Academic Choir;

Information and library services for readers are conducted in an automated mode and are carried out on 6 subscriptions, in 4 reading rooms for 201 seats.

In order to improve the health of students, the Vita sanatorium operates on the basis of KemSU. All students are assigned to the student polyclinic No. 10 of the MBUZ "City Clinical Hospital No. 1 named after M.N. Gorbunova".

The academic year begins on September 1 and is divided into two semesters, each ending with a test and examination session in accordance with the curriculum.

Additional expenses of students may include fees for accommodation in dormitories (for nonresidents), meals, leisure and other expenses.
