English for Academic Purposes

  • Age — from 18 years old,
  • Duration of study — from seven weeks.

This is an intensive in-person language training program offering effective improvement of English proficiency and development of important skills for achieving success in studies and career. The course focuses on communicative academic English, enhancing listening and reading, speaking and writing alongside in-person and virtual classroom interaction and language exercises.

It takes 7 weeks to complete each of the eight language levels — the duration of study depends on the students' initial skills. Each week, students can expect 20 hours of classes in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online lessons in small groups. What are the most popular majors among students currently?

Business remains popular, but engineering and IT are quickly gaining ground. STEM fields are seen as advantageous not only for education in Canada but also for gaining professional experience, especially with the post-study work opportunities they offer. The pandemic has also sparked increased interest in biological and chemical sciences.

Educational process

Humber Polytechnic follows trends in online education, providing the opportunity to earn a degree for students who cannot be present on campus. Distance learning students receive the same resources and support as in-person students: a wide range of academic materials, assistance in finding internships, individual attention from instructors, connection with classmates, and much more.

Faculties and colleges

Teaching is organized on the basis of several academic faculties:

  • Applied Sciences, Technology,
  • Health Sciences, Well-being,
  • Media, Creative Arts, Design,
  • Social and Community Services,
  • Business.

Scientific achievements

Modern infrastructure, practice-oriented teaching methods, an extensive range of partner companies combined with the creative potential and talent of students allow Humber Polytechnic to implement more than 30 major projects annually with the participation of over 60 organizations. Research centers conduct studies in several key areas:

  • Social innovation,
  • Systems integration,
  • Sustainable architecture,
  • Artificial intelligence,
  • User experience design.

Both highly qualified and experienced center staff and students of all disciplines and levels of education participate in research work.

Things to know about

Humber Polytechnic takes a responsible approach to the environment and develops sustainability initiatives. Implementing dozens of projects, the most common ones have been recycling programs and local community assistance: for example, meals prepared in the institute's kitchen but not used the same day are sent to shelters and food banks in the region. Each packed lunch contains protein, vegetables, and soups are packaged in one-liter containers for convenient transportation.

In addition to Humber Polytechnic, the project is supported by nine culinary and bakery laboratories.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Humber Polytechnic has several residences on two campuses: they accommodate approximately 1,700 students living there during the eight academic months, with some students extending their stay through the summer period. The residential complexes offer several types of rooms:

  • Traditional single rooms — 99% of residence options. Includes a single bed and work area, storage closets, and provides access to bathrooms and lounge areas on the floor,
  • Suite rooms — two- and three-room apartments with separate bedrooms, a shared bathroom, living room, and kitchen,
  • Semi-suite rooms — two-room apartments with single bedrooms, a shared bathroom, and a living room. A kitchen is not provided in this type of room.

The cost of accommodation includes all housing expenses: utilities, WiFi and wired Internet connection, and laundry services.

Humber Polytechnic has a dedicated department ready to assist in finding suitable off-campus housing if needed.

The Humber Polytechnic student ID serves as an official proof of identity and also as a meal card, which students use in several dining halls and cafeterias on campus. For convenience, students sign up for a meal plan that includes a certain number of meals per week and additional points to spend at campus establishments. The restaurant menus are diverse, featuring national and international cuisine, vegan and vegetarian options, and dietary choices.
