Fulford Academy is a small private boarding school in Brockville. It is truly international. Almost all students of the boarding school are foreigners. The private school of Fulford Academy is different from other Canadian institutions by its intricacy, family atmosphere. The school is also proud of high academic results of its students. Its graduates enter high-rated universities, colleges of the country and the world.
One of the main features of the school is the emphasis on language preparation. English is studied as a foreign language. The linguistic aspect can be traced in all school disciplines, starting with mathematics, ending with art. This approach excludes situations when the student does not learn the material because of language misunderstanding.
The school attracts foreign students with its high-quality courses and convenient location. Fulford Academy covers an area of 1.6 hectares in Brockville. The school building is a historical building, decorated in the Old English style. Inside, it's full of British interior traditions. The building resembles an English classical boarding school. It is on the river bank. From the windows there is a picturesque view of the city and the famous Brockville landmark - "A Thousand Islands". The language school is located a few kilometers from the border with the United States.
The Ontario Ministry of Education (Canada) has developed a state program that combines the profound passage of languages and other school subjects. To improve the level of English students use additional materials and gaming techniques. The program allows children from abroad to receive comprehensive training for admission to boarding schools in the country.
There are no more than 12 students in the Fulford Academy, and the training is provided by Ontario College of Teachers (Ontario College of Teaching). All teachers are certified for teaching to foreigners (ESL). For disciplines that are studied for more than 110 hours in a trimester, children must undergo an evaluation (get an academic credit).
Eight-graders learn English as an academic course and a course for foreigners. It is also necessary to study mathematics, modern history of Canada, information technology for doing business, a career development course, performing and visual arts, the foundations of medical care and a healthy lifestyle, Canada's geography, Man + Society and Civic position. The complex of natural sciences includes lessons in biology, physics, geology, astronomy and chemistry.
In the 9th grade, students continue to pass the same natural science subjects, the basics of health care and a healthy lifestyle, the course "Man and Society", the newest history of Canada, the civic education and career development course. English and mathematics form the basis of the program.
Pupils of the 10th grade have the opportunity to choose 6 subjects from natural, social and exact disciplines. Each direction must be represented. Also studying English and a healthy lifestyle (medical education).
Adolescents aged 11 to 17 can go to Fulford Academy for admission to English-language high school. The requirements of the program include not only language learning, but also cultural development, acquaintance with Canada and passing the courses of mathematics, English literature and social sciences. For one school year, schoolchildren increase lexical stock, receive skills in reading, writing, speaking. Acquaintance with the culture takes place at school and extra-curricular activities. Certification of the program opens the doors of any Canadian high schools for students.
ESL Foundation Program for children starts at 8:25. The completion of the educational process usually takes place at 16:30. The homework takes about two hours. Tasks for self-preparation teachers are asked every day, from Sunday to Thursday.
High School Support Program
If a student does not attend a desired higher school or university, this course will help improve and strengthen knowledge. Students, as a rule, indicate the chosen specialization and the university, and the teachers of Fulford Academy individually form the curriculum of classes depending on the progress and the necessary subjects. The academic plan includes the requirements of a particular high school student chosen by the student. After the completion of the annual High School Support program, it is possible to re-enter the chosen higher educational institution. Credits based on the results of the study are taken into account in the future in college, so the student does not lose one year and can improve his knowledge.
The courses in the summer months at Fulford Academy have their own characteristics. These are not classical language courses, but an intensive program of preparation for training in an English-language boarding school. The program will be useful to those children, whom the schools have already invited to study in September, but they know little about the Canadian education system. A week provides up to 40 language lessons (terms, conversation, group communication). Students also receive academic skills and learn methods of teaching. The lexical reserve after the completion of the summer course is sufficient for studying subjects in English.
On July 13 there is a massive arrival of children. Day school for them allocates for acquaintance and arrangement, and already from July, 15th the stage of intensive studying of language begins. The summer course ends on August 29, the next day the children leave the school grounds.
For the entire course it is necessary to pay 9850 Canadian dollars. The list of additional expenses will include school expenses ($ 2,000) and a fee for registration at the Fulford Academy ($ 200 Canadian dollars). Parents pay for the flight, school services when providing the curator, transfer and medical insurance. Prior to the start of training, a deposit equal to the course cost is paid.
