Flag of Poland: history and symbols

Flag of Poland: history and symbols

The flag of Poland presumably appeared from the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Even then, it was two-color - red and white. On a scarlet background there was a snow-white eagle with a golden beak and crown - the coat of arms of Poland.

By the way, the colors of the Polish flag are taken from the coat of arms. According to an ancient legend, Prince Lech, who founded a settlement near the Vistula and Odra rivers, stumbled upon an eagle's nest in these parts. So the eagle became a princely symbol, which was depicted on the flag.

Today, the flag of Poland consists of two stripes of equal size. The strip of white color represents morality and purity, red - courage and courage of the Polish people. On the white stripe of the flag, the image of the coat of arms of the country is allowed. Most often, this type of flag is used in consulates abroad, at airports or on merchant ships.

The location and number of stripes on the flag has changed over the course of history, and the colors have remained the same. The tandem of red and white colors is a symbol of the Polish state. White is the outstrapped wings of an eagle, red is a burning sunset. To this day, these two colors accompany the country in joy and sorrow. Poles respect history and annually celebrate The Day of the National Flag on May 2.
