Accreditation of English language schools: what to look for

Accreditation is a practical way to assess the quality of an English language school before entering. Different countries and international associations run inspection schemes with published standards, and membership usually means a school has been tested for compliance with these standards.

United Kingdom and international associations

English UK is the trade association for UK accredited English language teaching centres. It has around 300 member centres, all meeting the standards of its compulsory accreditation scheme, and the language centres it lists are accredited by the British Council. The wider UK English language teaching sector is worth almost £2bn and supports 40,000 jobs, according to a Pragmatix Advisory report published in April 2025. English UK is a registered charity, number 1108792 in England and Wales.

Eaquals is a world leader in accreditation for language teaching organisations, and its accreditation is regarded as the gold standard and a respected badge of excellence for language centres. Eaquals provides practical guidance and support to teaching institutions and individuals through Eaquals Accreditation, with expertise in quality assurance, academic management, teacher development and the CEFR. It is a registered UK charity, number 1143547, registered in England and Wales.

IALC, the International Association of Language Centres, accredits language schools against its IALC Quality Standards and has set standards in language education for more than 40 years. Its network covers 12 taught languages, 140+ year-round and seasonal centres, 120+ destinations and thousands of accredited courses, and every aspect of an IALC school is rigorously inspected. IALC is registered in the United Kingdom in Canterbury, Kent, with company number 09158586.

United States

ACCET, the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training, was founded in 1974 and has been recognised by the U.S. Department of Education as a reliable authority on educational quality since 1978. Its scope covers Intensive English Programs among other non-traditional post-secondary providers.

CEA, the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation, accredits English language programs and institutions worldwide to promote common standards of quality, and is recognised by the US Secretary of Education. It works toward recognition by the U.S. Department of Education for post-secondary, non-degree-granting English language programs and institutions, including those offered through distance education, and is a member of the Association of Specialized & Professional Accreditors. CEA publishes its accreditation decisions on its website under Recent Decisions within 30 days of each meeting.

English exams language schools prepare for

Most language schools abroad base their courses on internationally recognized English language exams. Knowing what each test assesses helps students choose a program that matches their goals, whether that is university admission, professional qualification or a general proficiency certificate.

  • IELTS — one of the most widely used academic and general English tests, jointly owned in 2026 by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
  • TOEFL iBT — an academic English test that assesses four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It has been used for more than 60 years and taken by over 40 million people worldwide. Scores are recognized by more than 13,000 institutions across 160+ countries, the test can be taken at home online or at a test centre with the same scoring, and results are available in as little as 3 days.
  • Cambridge English — the maker of IELTS and part of the University of Cambridge since 1534. Its exams and tests have been taken over 100 million times and are accepted by more than 25,000 universities, employers and governments in 130 countries. The range includes Cambridge English Qualifications, IELTS, Linguaskill, the Occupational English Test and the Michigan English Test, all reported on the single Cambridge English Scale.
