Volgograd State Medical University (VolSMU) is one of the best medical higher institutions in Russia. VolSMU was opened in 1935 as the Stalingrad Medical Institute - one of the oldest universities in the city. During the war, the institute worked until 1942, when the campus burned down, but a year later the institution reopened.
