Shiraz University is a state multidisciplinary university, research center. The basis for the existing institution was a technical college called the Higher Institute of Health, which trained medical specialists in a four-year program. In 1950, the college became a university, and in 1954 it survived the accession of several engineering and medical departments, as a result of which Pahlavi University appeared. This name was borne by Shiraz University until 1976.
Currently, the institution has a strong reputation among iranian universities. Many bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs are taught here for more than 20,000 students. Disciplines are conducted mainly in English, despite the fact that persian is considered the official language of Iran.

On campus there are dormitories for boys and girls. Several buildings have rooms that accommodate four people, common showers and toilets, kitchens, recreation and self-study areas.
