Description of Sahmyook University

  • Established: 1906
  • Location: Seoul, South Korea
  • Number of students: 5000
  • Language of instruction: Korean
  • Type: private.

Sahmyok University is a private Christian university that is part of the Association of Universities created by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The policy of the university is aimed at organizing the learning process as a combination of ministry to Christ, intellectual development, community service and personal initiative of students.

The educational institution was founded in 1906 in the territory that today belongs to North Korea. American missionaries acted as sponsors, whose main goal is to improve the quality of education of Christian believers in Korea.

During the reign of the Japanese, the university had to close: Sahmyok University resumed its work only in 1949 after moving to Seoul. Since then, the educational institution has been conducting uninterrupted activity, releasing a large number of competent specialists, patriots, and missionaries every year.

Today, the SU-MVP + 2025 plan is gaining momentum, the essence of which is the complete updating of both the material and technical base of the university and the curriculum: it is planned to increase the number of specialties, training places, build new training centers and hostels.

All students receive quality medical support: emergency assistance will be provided directly on campus, in difficult cases, students and teachers are hospitalized, and the university covers the costs. Everyone can get vaccinated at no cost.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Sahmyok University was the first university in South Korea to open a dormitory for men and women to live together - before that, all universities practiced resettlement in different buildings. Today, the university hostel offers more than 600 places to accommodate students: first of all, first-year students, excellent students and foreign students are provided with places. By 2020, it is planned to commission two new buildings for foreign students.

Canteens work on the basis of the academic building and the hostel, the main purpose of which is to provide students with quality and affordable food. The menu includes not only Korean dishes, but also the food of European, Italian, Japanese cuisines familiar to foreigners.
