The university was founded in 1939 in the city of Pyatigorsk. PSU is one of the few universities in the country that provides specialized education in the field of foreign languages and intercultural communication, the main university in this field in the South of Russia. 

The learning process includes lecture-type and seminar-type classes, practical and elective classes, educational, industrial and pre-diploma practices.

The university provides five dormitories for nonresident full-time students. A total of 1914 students can live in the buildings. The cost of living per month is 1235 rubles, additional household services monthly - from 565 to 715 rubles.

For meals for students and staff, PSU has a canteen, a buffet, 3 cafes and 2 coffee shops with 319 seats.

To involve students in social and scientific activities, PSU organizes and participates in the following events:

The education process takes place in 4 educational buildings, equipped with classrooms for lecture and seminar classes, for course design (course work), group and individual consultations, current control and intermediate certification. The classrooms are equipped with portable video magnifiers PCU-8 and information induction systems ICR1.

Students are given free access to the educational and scientific library of the university with reading rooms for 280 seats.

PSU provides the following sports facilities for sports:

At PSU, the learning process is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after passing the students, they are given vacations (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).

For admission to the university, applicants must provide the following list of documents:

At the moment, 4500 undergraduate and graduate students study at the university.

After graduating from PSU, graduates become specialists in various fields, civil servants or managers, diplomats, international journalists, literary workers who are able to translate fiction, and teachers of foreign languages.

To simplify the search for practice and work at the university, there is a Center for the Employment of Students and Graduates.

For admission to bachelor's and specialist's educational programs, an applicant must:

• Completed education is not lower than secondary general;
• Successful completion of an additional professional or creative test in the chosen direction – 60;
• Points received for the exam are not lower than:

For admission to master's programs, you must:

• Successful completion of the entrance exam in the chosen direction – 60/65.

For admission to postgraduate programs, you must:

• Completed higher education;
• Successful completion of entrance examinations with scores of at least 2.

As material support for students, the university allocates the following types of scholarships for students:
