Henry Solomon Lehr founded Ohio Northwestern High School in August 1871. When the college curriculum began to include programs in pharmacy, engineering, law and business, its name was changed to Ohio Normal University, and in 1903 to Ohio Northern University.

ONU is located in the small village of Ada, 1.5 hours from Columbus, 2.5 hours from Cleveland and Cincinnati, 4.5 hours from Chicago. Bluffton, about a 15-minute walk away, offers shops and cafes on the main street.

Education is organized on a semester system. During the semester, classes take place in the form of lectures, seminars, and laboratory work; in many programs, practical assignments, projects, and research play an important role.

In senior years, students complete final projects (capstone projects), where they apply acquired knowledge in practice; in engineering and scientific fields, such projects are often related to laboratory work or tasks of partner companies. Many programs include internships, clinical practice, and cooperative learning (co-op). Students can also participate in research projects under the supervision of faculty and present results at the Student Research Colloquium conference.

The university structure includes five colleges, each responsible for specific areas of academic training.

• Getty College of Arts & Sciences traces its history back to the university's founding in 1871, encompassing humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences disciplines. Within it operate several academic schools, including programs in humanities studies, social sciences, science and technology, arts, and performing disciplines.
• James F. Dicke College of Business Administration develops the university's business education. Programs in commerce and management were introduced here in 1909.
• Raabe College of Pharmacy was founded in 1884 — one of the oldest pharmacy colleges in the USA. The main educational program is a professional six-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
• Claude W. Pettit College of Law opened in 1885: the law school prepares specialists for legal practice and offers a Juris Doctor (JD) program.
• T.J. Smull College of Engineering began operations in 1920.

At Ohio Northern University, scientific projects in pharmaceutical sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, and public policy are actively being developed.

Students are regularly involved in research, working in laboratories and research groups alongside faculty members — the results of this work are presented annually at the university conference Student Research Colloquium, where more than 100 student research projects are showcased.

Publications by faculty and students appear in specialized international journals.

Part of the projects is externally funded: for example, the Don Wood Foundation allocated $1.05 million to establish a materials science laboratory in the College of Engineering.

The law school publishes the Ohio Northern University Law Review journal, where research on law and legal practice is published.

• Already in 1893, the university received a bronze medal and a blue ribbon at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago (World&rsquo's Columbian Exposition) for its educational activities.
• The university includes one of the country's oldest pharmaceutical colleges — Raabe College of Pharmacy, founded in 1884.
• The university symbol — Polar Bear (white bear). It appeared in 1923 when the student newspaper proposed a new mascot for the sports teams: since then, the university's teams compete under the name Ohio Northern Polar Bears, and the white bear has become part of the university's symbolism.
• In 1910, US President William Howard Taft addressed the students with a speech, and in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. visited the campus.
• Law school graduate Lina Boggs Wilcox Mason in 1896 became one of the first female lawyers in the state of Ohio and the only woman to receive a license to practice law in the state that year.

The epicenter of art and culture in Ada Village is the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Northern Ohio University. Inside the Freed Center there is a 551-seat theater, a 136-seat cinema, an art gallery.

The admission process involves several stages.

1. First, the applicant selects a study program and submits a package of documents to the university's admissions committee.
