The Northfield Mount Hermon School was founded in 1879 by Evangelist Dwight Lyman Moody. Initially, these were 2 schools - separate for boys and girls - but today the institution works through a system of mixed, joint education, offering education to Americans and foreign students in the program of 9-12 grades.
Historically, the school was intended for teaching students (including religious and moral education) from poor families with limited financial resources. And today the tradition of appreciating and respecting work, especially manual, is observed regularly and accurately in school. Earlier, in the 19th century, children worked up to 10 hours a week: they helped with cleaning, in agricultural work or laundry. Today, public works take less time, but the spirit of equality, unity, brotherhood is considered a key feature of the school: students of any nationality, religion and faith study here. In 2010, the school published a manifesto in which it proclaimed its main values: the ability to work in a team and to be friends, to be honest and respect other people, to develop creative skills and mastery in any endeavors.
The school campus includes its own farm, which provides the kitchen with fresh, environmentally friendly products. Students often help farm workers, spend time on air and interacting with nature - even special excursions are organized here for school, city and state guests.
