The Northfield Mount Hermon School was founded in 1879 by Evangelist Dwight Lyman Moody. Initially, these were 2 schools - separate for boys and girls - but today the institution works through a system of mixed, joint education, offering education to Americans and foreign students in the program of 9-12 grades.

Historically, the school was intended for teaching students (including religious and moral education) from poor families with limited financial resources. And today the tradition of appreciating and respecting work, especially manual, is observed regularly and accurately in school. Earlier, in the 19th century, children worked up to 10 hours a week: they helped with cleaning, in agricultural work or laundry. Today, public works take less time, but the spirit of equality, unity, brotherhood is considered a key feature of the school: students of any nationality, religion and faith study here. In 2010, the school published a manifesto in which it proclaimed its main values: the ability to work in a team and to be friends, to be honest and respect other people, to develop creative skills and mastery in any endeavors.

The school campus includes its own farm, which provides the kitchen with fresh, environmentally friendly products. Students often help farm workers, spend time on air and interacting with nature - even special excursions are organized here for school, city and state guests.

But the academic success of students is at a very high level - just look at the list of universities where graduates of the boarding school have successfully entered:

The list of school graduates is full of famous, respected names - for example:

  • Uma Thurman (Hollywood actress)
  • Laurence Ferlingetti (poet)
  • William Rhodes (businessman, president of the Citibank group of companies).

In summer, students from all over the world can take an effective academic program in the school to improve their knowledge and preparation for the university, and for foreign students, an ESL English language support course is provided.

Particular attention in the educational process is paid to the education and inculcation of valuable academic skills, without which it is impossible to study at the university: writing an extensive academic essay, holding public speeches, debates, discussions, conducting personal or team projects and research. Classes here last not the usual 50 minutes, and 1.5 hours, which also brings students closer to university standards.

For each of the student, not one, but several mentors and curators is assigned, profile useful consultations are held regarding career guidance and career planning. Students are taught how to properly prepare a curriculum and choose subjects for it, help them decide on their future specialty, faculty and university, fill out and submit documents, prepare for an interview with the admission committee, entrance tests, subject or language tests.
