The International School of Management was opened in Dortmund in 1990. In July 2004, it became the first non-state university in North Rhine-Westphalia and the second in Germany to receive institutional accreditation for a period of 10 years from the German National Council for Science and Human Research. In 2016, the accreditation was extended for another 10 years, making the university the only business school in Germany to receive accreditation for twenty consecutive years.
