Early Years
- Student age — 2–5 years.
Preschool education is a rich and engaging program that helps children gently enter the academic world. Classes are conducted in English and gradually prepare children for primary school. This stage is considered a very important foundation that influences further learning and development.
The Early Years program at International School of Como is based on the International Baccalaureate primary school curriculum and the Reggio Emilia philosophy: this approach helps children develop independence, curiosity, and the willingness to try new things. Learning is built through play and exploration, and children learn at a comfortable pace.
Immersion in an English language environment begins from the earliest years: classes are taught by native speakers, so children naturally begin to acquire English speech from the age of two. At preschool age, introduction to reading and writing takes place through play, creativity, and simple learning tasks; as children grow, they gradually develop language skills, learn to read, and prepare for the transition to primary school.
From the age of three, children study under the Primary Years Programme, entirely in English: the curriculum includes literacy and mathematics fundamentals, inquiry-based activities, music, art, reading with a teacher, library sessions, physical activities, and group meetings. The program aims to develop a love of learning, curiosity, and foundational academic skills from an early age.
The support team helps address potential learning difficulties so that every child can progress at their own pace. The dedicated Early Years zone on campus includes spacious classrooms, playgrounds, and creative spaces designed in the Reggio Emilia spirit; on the grounds there are science and art studios, music classrooms, a performance hall, sports courts, play areas, and a cafeteria. The dining hall serves balanced meals to help establish healthy eating habits from an early age.

Educational process
At International School of Como, students from grades 2 to 11 can choose one of two educational paths: international or Italian within the DP programme.
The Italian path combines DP and the national curriculum of the country, allowing students to obtain a dual qualification — the Middle Years Programme certificate and the Licenza Media. Those who choose the international programme are not required to take Italian language exams and receive more hours for core subjects.
Language choice in the DP is an important part of the school's educational philosophy: it helps develop global thinking and an understanding of different cultures. Children and teenagers study several languages, which broadens their horizons and helps them communicate more effectively in an international environment. The Italian Language B course is designed for students who study Italian as a foreign language: it begins in second grade and continues almost until graduation. The curriculum is structured sequentially so that children gradually develop their skills and can confidently use the language in further studies and life in Italy.
Creative and performing arts disciplines are part of the PYP and MYP programmes: students study visual arts, music, and theatre as part of the core curriculum.
Additionally, extracurricular activities, excursions, and masterclasses led by teachers are available.
