The program of pre-university education, is designed for students 16-18 years (graduation classes, Sixth Form). A-level implies studying for 2 academic years.
The program is considered the "gold standard" of British education: it is complex and thorough, intensive - but the A-level certificate gives the graduate the right to enter even the best, most prestigious universities without additional entrance examinations.
The students choose all subjects for the personal curriculum on their own - there are 24 variants in general. The first course offers 4-5 subjects, the second of which remains only 3-4, which are surrendered in the exam. As a rule, at this educational stage, students already clearly understand which faculty and specialty they are most interested in, and can focus on studying of the most priority disciplines in order to increase their chances of enrollment.
In addition, high school students undergo a special program called Critical Method (development of critical and analytical thinking, independence).
Description of Highgate School
One of the leading private London schools - Highgate School - accepts students from 3 to 18 years of age for education: British subjects and foreign students. The school works on full-time education and offers a mixed education scheme.
The educational institution was founded in 1565 by the royal charter of Elizabeth I: today the school honours its historical traditions and carefully preserves the memories of the past, combining them with innovative educational methods and modern technical equipment. This helps children to achieve impressive academic results and at the same time to learn in a calm, comfortable, friendly atmosphere.
The structure of Highgate School includes the following units:
- Pre-Preparatory School (3-7 years)
- Junior School (7-11 years)
- Senior School (11-18 years).
There are logical differences between all branches, but everywhere there are common school values: the education of a sense of responsibility and community, a steady motivation for self-development and a desire for new knowledge, personal growth and self-education.
Most often, children arrive at the age of 3, 7, 11, 13 and 16 - mostly British children from families living nearby.
The "house system" is adopted in the educational institution: all the children are divided into house groups (each run by Housemaster along with their assistants), and various contests, quizzes, competitions in the creative, sports or academic spheres take place between them.
