New Zealand is preparing significant changes to the visa system for international students: after their studies, it will be easier for them to stay in the country and find a job. This was announced by Immigration New Zealand. The main innovation is the introduction of the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, which is planned to be launched at the end of 2026. It will be available to graduates of programs below the bachelor's degree level, granting the right to work in the country for up to six months: during this time, one can find a job and, if necessary, switch to a work visa.
There are several conditions:
- You must complete a program at NZQCF level 5–7,
- Study full-time for at least 24 weeks,
- Submit an application within three months after the student visa expires,
- Prove you have at least NZ$ 5,000 for living expenses.
At the same time, this visa does not allow you to bring family members and requires official employment.
Simultaneously, opportunities are being expanded for those who studied at a higher level. Now graduates of a Graduate Diploma (Level 7) will be able to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa; the duration of such a visa will depend on the length of study but will not exceed one year. In this case, you can already bring your family, provided all requirements are met.
These changes are part of a broader strategy for developing international education in the country: the authorities want not only to attract more foreign students but also to help them find jobs in sectors where New Zealand lacks specialists. The plans are quite ambitious: New Zealand expects to increase revenue from international education to NZ$ 7.2 billion by 2034 and bring the number of international students to 119,000.
