Certificate programs at College of San Mateo are focused on practical training and help develop specific professional skills. Certificates are awarded upon successful completion of all program courses and submission of documents to the Office of Admissions and Records.
The college offers 2 main types of certificates.
- The first — Certificate of Achievement: more extensive programs that include a minimum of 16 semester courses, which are reflected in the academic transcript. They confirm systematic preparation in a professional field and can be used as part of career education or as a supplement to an Associate Degree.
- The second type — Certificate of Specialization. These programs are shorter, some even fewer than 16 academic courses, but are clearly focused on specific skills. Some of them are offered in an accelerated format — 8-16 weeks, so that students can quickly prepare to enter the job market in entry-level positions.
Certificate program studies can be full-time or part-time, daytime or evening. To obtain a certificate, students must successfully complete all courses with a grade of no less than C, unless the program provides for a different criterion. According to college rules, at least half of the courses must be completed directly at College of San Mateo.
The content of the programs is closely related to professional skills that are in demand in the job market. For example, in some courses students learn business management, marketing, or accounting, while in others they study the fitness industry: anatomy, physiology, training methodology, and the development of sports programs.
