Clare College Cambridge

• Status: second-oldest college at the University of Cambridge,
• Location: riverside site in the city center.

Clare College has a postgraduate community of around 300 students at any given time.

The college welcomes students from a wide range of backgrounds to a community where they can develop academically and personally.

Architecture teaching takes place mainly in the Department of Architecture. First-year Architecture students typically spend two days in the studio and attend six or seven lectures each week, as well as three classes and three small-group supervisions every two weeks.

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies teaching is organized centrally by the faculty. In Part I of Classics, students focus on advanced grammar and prose composition. First-year Classics students receive instruction and feedback on writing mechanics and style.

In Computer Science, laboratory work is an important part of courses such as Digital Electronics and Algorithms. Second-year students complete an assessed group project that simulates an industrial workplace and software procurement process. In the third year, each student completes a substantial project and writes a dissertation of up to 12,000 words.

Economics teaching at Clare draws on four Economics Fellows and economists from other Cambridge colleges and departments.

Each year, Clare College awards prizes to undergraduates who achieve first-class results on their examinations.

Clare College offers accommodation at a residence in Clare College. Boys and girls live separately in one or two-bed apartments. Bathrooms and all conveniences are on the floor. Wireless Internet is available in the residence. In common use there is a recreation room, a games room.

The food is organized according to the full board scheme. A spacious dining room is open for students. The menu offers a wide range of dishes (mainly British and international cuisine). During the excursion days, students are provided with packed lunches.

Clare College offers an extensive program of excursions and entertainment. The language school organizes discos, quizzes, film screenings, themed parties, barbecue evenings. The curriculum also includes outbound excursions: one per week for the whole day and half a day. Students can visit London with its world-famous attractions, the famous University Center of Oxford, Stretford-upon-Avon (the city of Shakespeare), the old Canterbury, Leeds, as well as many parks and historical sites.

Daily routine
The lessons take place in the morning, in the afternoon. Free afternoons and evenings students can devote to Cambridge walks, fun, shopping.

• Directors of Studies guide Asian and Middle Eastern Studies students through the program and its requirements,
• Each new Classics student receives a set of core reference books on long-term loan.

Students have lessons in spacious modern classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards. In the building there is a computer classroom, game halls. On the territory of the college there is own boat station, several sports fields, tennis courts. Wireless Internet is available on campus.

Postgraduate applications to Clare are submitted to the University of Cambridge. The relevant faculty or department makes the initial academic recommendation. Once a formal academic offer has been made, the University Postgraduate Admissions Office sends the application to colleges for membership consideration. • Undergraduate applicants must choose a subject offered by Clare College and meet the requirements of both the University of Cambridge and the college,
• Applicants to Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Veterinary Medicine must take the Engineering and Science Admissions Test. Computer Science and Economics applicants must take the Test of Mathematics for University Admissions. Law applicants must take the Law National Aptitude Test, and Medicine applicants must take the University Clinical Aptitude Test. Clare will not consider an application if the required test is not taken,
• Application materials vary by subject. Most written work should be around 1,500–2,500 words and come from regular school assignments. Design applicants must submit a six-page A4 PDF under 15 MB. English applicants must submit two literary essays and a recent reading list. Music applicants must submit a music essay and either an original composition or a music theory exercise,
• Applicants invited to interview for certain humanities and social science subjects take a college assessment without separate advance registration. Most invited applicants have two or three interviews, each lasting 20–30 minutes,
• Selection is based on academic potential, self-motivation, interest in the chosen subject, the written application, admissions tests, submitted work, and overall interview performance.
