Description of Centre for Medieval & Renaissance Studies

  • Year of foundation: 2005
  • Location: Middlebury, Oxford, UK
  • Students age: 18+
  • Number of students: 100+
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Type of study: university program.

The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and its humanitarian programme are carried out on a daily basis by Oxford scholars; it focuses on the needs of overseas students who have chosen Middleberry College as their alma mater.

The course program can be adapted to the needs of a particular student (including work with other institutions on basic loans). Students participating in the program have the right to reside in dormitories in St Michael's Hall, within walking distance of Keble and other colleges, libraries, museums, oxford shops.

The program is devoted to the study of the whole variety of means of human self-expression - literature, language, philosophy, history, art, music, theater - in historical perspective. Students can choose from a very wide variety of textbooks in the humanities and social sciences, covering popular topics to this day.

Educational process

The center has language courses in ancient, medieval and modern languages:

  • Latin
  • ancient Greek,
  • Old English and Middle English,
  • Old French,
  • Upper German and Middle High German,
  • Arab
  • Chinese
  • 16 European languages.

Courses in medieval and ancient languages are offered for both advanced students and beginners, in modern languages - only for advanced students.

Students cannot combine their studies at Middlebury-CMRS with work - this is the policy of the training center; it is believed that the academic workload does not allow students to work during the semester.

Scientific achievements

The Center publishes an annual almanac, where scientific works and journalism of students, teachers and staff are published.

St Michael's Hall was built in 1869–1875 and is a tall rectangular red brick building with large cones in the shape of arches 4 floors high. The Centre's activities are held in various premises.

The building is conveniently located in the city centre, within 150 metres of Carfax, the city's ancient crossroads and the centre of Oxford's academic, cultural and social life. The two junior deans live in the dormitory and are responsible for the well-being of the students during extracurricular hours.
