Accreditation and quality assurance
When comparing French-language schools in Switzerland, check whether a language center holds accreditation from Eaquals or membership in IALC. Eaquals accreditation covers quality assurance, academic management, teacher development and use of the CEFR. The organization also gives institutions practical guidance and support.
IALC member schools are independently accredited and inspected against rigorous quality standards. This review covers every aspect of an institution, helping students assess whether course details are carefully managed. Membership or accreditation is a useful quality indicator, but applicants should verify the provider’s current status with the relevant body before booking.
Entry visas and student permits for French courses
Non-EU/EFTA students must apply for a visa through the Swiss embassy or consulate in their place of residence before entering Switzerland. Holders of a valid long-stay visa or residence permit issued by another Schengen State do not need a separate Swiss application.
A student permit usually covers the full course when studies last less than one year. For longer programs, authorization is issued for one year and may be renewed until completion. Switzerland authorizes courses lasting no more than 8 years.
Required documents include:
- Confirmation of financial means or a sponsorship certificate using Form O,
- A school eligibility certificate,
- An extract from the criminal record,
- A written commitment to leave Switzerland after completing the course.
