All European schools adhere to common standards, differing, however, in details. These differences are particularly significant in two areas:

  • organization of the educational process of the last two years of study, immediately preceding the final exams and the issuance of a certificate;
  • teaching basic, compulsory elements of the school curriculum (this most often includes native and foreign languages, mathematics and natural or social sciences).

At the same time, public schools have their own curricula in all countries; in private, we can talk about the International Baccalaureate (IB), A-level and GCSE, High School and AP. Nevertheless, mathematics is in any case included in the mandatory component.

There are several reasons for this - let's name the main ones:

  • The study of mathematics and problem solving allows the student to learn how to identify the general and isolate the significant, teaches analysis and systematization, the search for patterns, think logically, abstractly and strategically, improving intelligence and cognitive abilities;
  • Learning math is the best memory training;
  • The correct solution of mathematical problems requires such character traits as perseverance and responsibility, scrupulousness and attention to detail;
  • Mathematics as an interdisciplinary phenomenon contributes to the deepening of physical, geographical, chemical and other knowledge. Long-term observations have confirmed that students who excel in mathematics are more likely to achieve success in the social and social sciences, especially since the same models and laws are applied in journalism, political science and linguistics as in mathematics;
  • Mathematics allows you to improve your skills in working with household tasks; In addition, it is the key to a successful career. Having understood the principles and background of technological development, a person receives excellent career prospects in any field - from IT to economics and law.
  • Finally, solving problems in mathematics develops psychological stability.

This, of course, is not all the reason to choose to put math at the center when choosing a school. The sciences in general are an integral part of the development of any person, as much as health, career, family and or sports.

Consider the specifics of teaching mathematics in the school curricula of some European countries.
