The Architecture major establishes an intellectual context for students to interpret the relation of form, space, program, materials and media to human life and thought. Through the Architecture curriculum, students participate in the ongoing shaping of knowledge about the built environment and learn to see architecture as one among many forms of cultural production. At the same time, the major stresses the necessity of learning disciplinary-specific tools, methods, terms and critiques. Thus, work in the studio, lecture or seminar asks that students treat architecture as a form of research and speculation which complement the liberal arts mission of expansive thinking.
The M.Arch. thesis-based program consists of a combination of coursework and a design component. The School of Architecture offers three graduate degrees: a NAAB-accrediteda professional Master of Architecture degree (MArch), a post-professional Master of Science in Architecture degree (MSArch), and an academic Master of Arts in Design Criticism (MAD-Crit). The School also offers joint degrees in Architecture and Design Criticism. Master of Architecture (MArch): a three-year professional degree for applicants who have a bachelor's degree in any field. The MArch consists of a studio-centered curriculum supported by required and elective course work in architectural technology and theory. Applicants must have completed a calculus course and a year-long survey in architectural history or art history prior to enrolling in the program. Rice School of Architecture's graduate programs offer a design education in combination with a thorough grounding in architectural history, theory, and technology. Rice’s graduate program culminates in an independent design thesis, on the principle that an architectural education provides a complete exposure to architecture’s breadth, from which the student establishes his or her depth, or expertise, through this thesis design project. Professional Degree Program (MArch) The RSA has two graduate programs leading to a first professional degree. Option 1 is a seven semester course of study for students with no or limited undergraduate background in architecture. Option 2 is a five semester course of study for students with substantial undergraduate backgrounds in architecture. The Option 1 and 2 Master of Architecture degrees are fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), qualifying our graduates to sit for professional licensing exams.

If you are interested in working in the building-design industry, or you plan to pursue a degree in architecture at a four-year university, this program could put you on the path to your ideal career. In this program, you’ll learn to produce architectural drawings using computer-aided drafting (CAD) software and tools, such as Revit, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture and SketchUp. Courses develop your understanding of 3-D modeling, building codes, construction materials and methods, cost estimating and green building. As a graduate of this program, you might work as a drafter for architects, landscape architects, engineers (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical) contractors, manufacturing companies, product suppliers and other design-related companies.
The Spitzer School of Architecture at City College, now approaching fifty years old, is the only public school of architecture in New York City. Its emphasis on the urban environment as the most important generator of ideas about the appropriateness of programs and forms makes it unique among the constellation of architecture schools in New York and the surrounding region. Approximately 420 students from the city, the country and around the world pursue professional undergraduate degrees in Architecture and graduate degrees in Architecture, Urban Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Sustainability in the Urban Environment. Master of Architecture The graduate curriculum is structured to allow flexibility and to accommodate diverse student needs. This is accomplished by offering a combination of choices of studies available within the various program options. The M.Arch. 1 option results in a post-professional degree, while the M.Arch. 2 and 3 options result in the conferring of a first professional degree, fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. The various design laboratories are oriented toward formulation and resolution of design questions at a broad range of scales. In addition to fostering a mastery of the design process, the design laboratory is intended to cultivate a foundation for design through the study of concepts and principles of form generation, through education of an environmental awareness and aesthetic judgment, through study of the syntax of architectural language, and through the development of technical knowledge of the processes of fabrication and construction. These learning-oriented laboratories encourage the use of previously acquired knowledge, skills, and experience gained in the architectural profession and in other academic disciplines.
