The United Kingdom continues to tighten control over universities and colleges that admit international students. One of the first consequences of the new policy was the situation surrounding Bloomsbury Institute — a London higher education institution specialising in business, law and accounting programs. In June, it became known that the institute had temporarily lost its right to sponsor (in effect, officially invite) international students, and enrolment for the upcoming academic period was suspended. The information came to light following an update to the official register of student sponsors published by the Home Office.
A week before that, the university notified its international partners and agencies about the suspension of recruitment for an indefinite period, stating that it is temporarily not considering any new or previously submitted applications for admission to the October intake. For prospective applicants, this means that submitting documents to Bloomsbury Institute is currently not possible, as a review by UK Visas and Immigration is underway. Bloomsbury Institute states that it is actively cooperating with the regulator and working to meet all current requirements: management has already made a number of changes to its governance system and internal processes in order to bring the institute's operations into compliance with the updated rules.
For those already studying at the institute, the situation remains unchanged for now: classes continue as normal, and all academic and support services continue to operate. Students retain access to educational programs and the necessary support from staff.
