Aurora College is one of 2 higher education institutions in the Northwest Territories, a special administrative unit of Canada. The Northwest Territories are a subarctic sparsely populated region where indigenous peoples (Indians, Eskimos, Métis) make up more than 50% of the population.

The main objective of Aurora College is to promote the education of the district's population, taking into account the peculiarities of indigenous cultures. The college takes into account the unique needs of the local labor market (diamond, silver, uranium, oil and gas mining, crafts) and at the same time provides such education that graduates can build their careers in any province of Canada and beyond.

In 1968, the Adult Vocational Training Center was founded, which solved the problem of secondary vocational education in NWT. The center developed, new professions and directions were added, so in 1981 it received college status and was renamed Thebacha College. In 1995, Thebacha College merged with the Scientific Institute of the Northwest Territories, after which it became known as Aurora College, and its research part is now called the Aurora Research Institute.

The first campus was built in Fort Smith - and now it is the main one, the college office center is located there. Campuses later opened in Yellowknife and Inuvik, the larger cities of the territory. Given the peculiarities of the region (long distances, cultural differences, sparsely populated territories), the college opened its small representative offices in each community. Developing digital technologies facilitate the learning process of students located remotely from each other.

Representatives of Aurora College in the communities maintain close ties with secondary schools, create training programs to prepare students for college, where you can get a diploma or a bachelor's degree. After the diploma 2-year program, you can enter the 3-year undergraduate course at the university.

Equipment Aurora College

Aurora College has 5 schools (faculties):

  • School of Developmental Studies
  • School of Business and Leadership
  • School of education
  • School of Health and Social Services
  • School of professions, training and industrial training.

The college also implements art and science programs.

  1. The Aurora Campus in Inuvik is the northernmost campus in the country near the Arctic Circle. 150 people live and study here. The specialization of the Inuvik campus is personnel for the oil and gas industry.
  2. The main campus in Fort Smith is called the Tebacha campus: there are administrative offices and most of the training programs are implemented, almost 300 people study. Fort Smith is located on the banks of the Arkansas River near Wood Buffalo National Park.
  3. The third campus is located in the capital of NWT Yellowknife. This is the largest city in the region, which is not only an industrial center, but also a medical center of the Northwest Territories, therefore the Yellowknife campus specializes in training medical personnel. Training in the Nursing program is being conducted jointly with the University of Victoria. Over 200 full-time students study here.

The remaining students study either in community learning centers, either online or through part-time programs. As a rule, 1 specialist, an adult educator, works in the training center, who is responsible for organizing and conducting the courses. Training centers offer short courses in professions and preparatory programs for admission to college: driving education, safety, accounting training, environmental monitoring and others.

All campuses have hostels, including for family students. The hostels have comfortable conditions, but a limited number of places, especially for families. For family students with young children there is a public kindergarten. There are not enough places in the kindergarten either, students of long-term programs have an advantage everywhere.

All 3 campuses and the Aurora Research Institute have libraries with collections of scientific literature, periodicals, documents, and video materials. Internet access and interlibrary loan are available in all college libraries.

On campus, there are Student Success Centers that provide tutoring, seminars, and career counseling. Their mission is the success of every student at Aurora College.

Also, psychologists advise students on each campus: they suggest how to develop abilities, make decisions, and realize responsibility. Consultations are free and confidential.

The college attaches great importance to sports: students engage in basketball, volleyball, soccer, hockey, skiing, sporting events, relay races.

Student associations are responsible for social activities on campus; they also distribute college uniforms and commemorative signs.

Hello, please tell me, is it necessary to complete a preparatory course at this university? (If admission is from the age of 19, and in Russia there are only 11 grades) If yes, is it possible to complete the course in another educational institution?
