Why do tourists go to Somalia if it is so dangerous there?

Why do tourists go to Somalia if it is so dangerous there?

In 2021, Somalia was once again included by International SOS in the list of the most dangerous tourist countries. Despite all the dangers in the African country, there are a lot of "black tourists" who are ready to risk their own lives for a lot of money for the sake of bright sensations. Somalia is ideal for such extremes: incessant wars, seizures of ships by pirates, constant coups d'état ... A failed state beckons – and at the same time repels.

Your own order

Bloggers and travelers rarely, but go to such hot spots as Afghanistan, Iraq, Mali. For many, their actions seem wild, but the extremists themselves explain their behavior by love for Africa and its chaotic order. On this amazing continent, chaos is order. Few people understand this philosophy, but the most striking example of such orderly chaos was Somalia.

Pirates bring special glory to this state with their daring actions on the territory of coastal waters. Even cinema was interested in the life of Somalis: Ridley Scott shot the film "Black Hawk", which was dedicated to the events of the Somali war. At the moment, almost 62% of the population are young people under 25 years old, which suggests the idea: they were born in the war and live in it all their lives.

Despite all the internal concussions, students study in schools for 15-17 dollars a month. For all 12 years, Somalis have been studying mathematics, business, religion, foreign languages. There are also higher educational institutions where graduates can receive education.

Divide and govern

The modern republic is divided into 6 unrecognized countries. The official part of Somalia is Mogadishu, it is here that visas are made and at least some kind of government sits. To get into the country, you must have a couple of guards with you: foreigners can walk around the city only accompanied, otherwise - a quick death.

You can get a visa already upon arrival in Somalia, after the permission of the Migration Department to enter. The inviting party must be the company or person who will take responsibility for your stay. It is worth remembering that the locals do not treat the tourists very warmly: the Somalis believe that it was the domestic military that sank the boat with disarmed pirates from Somalia.

In principle, in 30 years of lawlessness, government troops and the UN have taken under their protection only a four-kilometer zone from Mogadishu. The rest of the territory is controlled by various gangs. However, explosions occur in the protected one.

Dangerous City

Everyone walks the streets of the city with weapons. All hotels are equipped with barriers and special concrete snakes to avoid the high-speed entry of a car bomb. The security service inside the country constantly monitors foreigners and informs them about possible dangers from locals. To travel to such a country you need to prepare in advance - physically and morally. It will be difficult for an unprepared person to understand how people constantly live in conditions of civil war, when every day there are terrorist attacks and kidnappings.

There is not a single hotel in Mogadishu that has not been attacked by bandits. At least once or twice each of the hotels was seized by terrorists. To protect their business and customers, owners have to make real fortifications out of their buildings, which, unfortunately, do not always help.

Despite the devastation in the city, poverty and military atmosphere, Somalia has beautiful beaches, friendly and smiling people. An interesting place to visit can be the ruined Italian cathedral or the Old Town. There was no place left among the ruins where bullet holes were not visible, but this did not prevent the buildings from retaining their colonial style. Tourists can also visit the fish market and the snow-white beach.

Tourist route

A trip to Somalia will cost adrenaline lovers about $ 750 per day. This price includes hotel accommodation, various excursions, trips on an armored jeep with bulletproof glass and round-the-clock security.

Traveling without security, it is very easy to turn from a free foreigner into a hostage. White hostages for the locals are a million-dollar win, literally. The traveler himself is destined for two fates after being caught: to be redeemed - or to become famous during the procedure of cutting off the head, sorry for the directness.
