University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice

1991 is the year when one of the leading educational institutions in the Czech Republic, the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, was founded. Abbreviation of the educational center - JČU. The university infrastructure is located in Ceske Budejovice. The campus is in the suburbs.

JČU is in the national top 10 best countries of the Czech Republic. 

Upon completion of continuing education programs, participants receive a certificate rather than an academic degree. They may use the library, information services, and university infrastructure necessary for studying the chosen program. Participants in these programs do not have student status under Czech law on higher education institutions.

• The team from the Faculty of Philosophy carried out a geophysical survey of part of the Huacas de Moche archaeological complex in Peru.
• In the Academic Bicycle Challenge cycling marathon, participants from the university covered a combined total of 113,000 km in 2025.

The cooperation between the University of South Bohemia and Universidad Nacional de Trujillo covers Spanish philology since 2018 and archaeology since 2022.

University residences and dining halls are managed by the KaM division.

Continuing education program participants are not eligible for discounted rates on residence accommodation and meals in the university dining hall.

The student union, the ESN USB Budweis association for international students, and the student radio station K2 organize events on campus, in the city, and in the surrounding area. Among them are charity fundraisers. Every semester there are International Days, where students present their countries, cultures, and traditions.

Throughout the academic year, the following take place:

• the USB Freshers’ Course program for first-year students of all faculties: the student union holds icebreaker activities and games, sports events, and trips around the area,
• the Summer Camp for students, organized by upperclassmen, mostly members of the student union,
• the autumn music and arts festival Campus is Alive, with lectures and workshops,
• the Academic Half Hours popular science lectures for students and the general public,
• a Halloween celebration with a costume procession from campus to the K2 club and contests,
• educational and entertainment quizzes run by the student union,
• an Advent concert at St. Nicholas Cathedral in České Budějovice,
• a university ball for students, staff, alumni, and the general public,
• Welcome Semester Party events at the start of each semester,
• the spring Art Day festival, featuring music, dance, art exhibitions, photo exhibitions, and author readings,
• a hockey derby between the University of South Bohemia and VŠTE,
• a traditional spring celebration held by the Faculty of Agriculture together with students, featuring the raising of a maypole, the burning of a witch effigy, and music,
• the University Closer music festival, organized by students and student organizations,
• a food festival featuring local delicacies.

JČU is considered an average educational institution by the number of students. It accommodates more than 13 thousand students, including many foreigners. The university’s academic staff includes approximately 800 teachers. Students and teachers can participate in academic exchange and try their hand at international universities.

University infrastructure

The infrastructure of the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice includes academic buildings, apartments for students and a library.

Additional expenses may include fees:

• for reviewing the admission application,
• for exceeding the established study period.

The admission committee enrolls applicants on the basis of the provided estimates from the previous place of education. You also need to pass the entrance exams. Most applicants enroll in a university (the percentage of enrollment is approximately 75%, but it may vary depending on the direction and program of study).

Tuition for bachelors and masters is about 1 800 USD.

The university offers scholarships and grants for academic achievement, participation in research, and international exchanges. The following types of support are available:

• Merit scholarship — for full-time bachelor's and master's students who earned at least 60 credits in the previous academic year with a weighted average grade of no more than 1.60. It is awarded within the standard length of study, which the dean may extend by up to one year following successful completion of study at a foreign university under an international exchange program. Average amount — 7,000 Czech crowns,
• Merit award — for outstanding scientific, innovative, artistic, and other creative achievements related to studies. It may be awarded as a dean's award or another award at the dean's discretion. Average amount — 17,000 Czech crowns,
• Rector's award — for master's graduates who defended their thesis with distinction, completed their studies with honors, and achieved a weighted average grade for the entire period of no more than 1.20,
• Research scholarship — for participants in projects of the university's grant agency, agencies of its departments, and other university research and innovation activities. Average amount — 37,000 Czech crowns,
• Financial assistance — for full-time students in a difficult social situation. The decision is made by the dean based on a substantiated application,
• Emergency scholarship — in exceptional circumstances at the dean's discretion, based on a substantiated application from the student or at the initiative of a member of the academic community,
• Special scholarship for students with disabilities or health limitations — to compensate for increased study-related expenses. The decision is made by the dean on the recommendation of the university support center. Average amount — 6,000 Czech crowns,
• Special grant — for students who develop cooperation between the university or faculty and representatives of their professional field,
• Accommodation scholarship — for full-time bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students who permanently reside outside the district where they study. The candidate must not already hold a degree of the corresponding type or exceed the standard length of study of any of the programs being studied in parallel. Average amount — 4,500 Czech crowns,
• Study abroad grant — for participants in the university's international exchanges who have not exceeded the standard length of study by more than one year. Average amount — 25,000 Czech crowns,
• Grant for studying in the Czech Republic — for students of foreign-language programs at the dean's discretion. Average amount — 88,000 Czech crowns,
• Basic doctoral scholarship — for full-time study, if the standard length of study is exceeded by no more than one year. When determining the length of study, all periods of previous incomplete doctoral study are taken into account. The amount and procedure for awarding it are set by the dean; average amount — 97,000 Czech crowns.
