Summer School Southampton in the famous port city on the south coast of England Southampton is based on the campus of the University of Solent. Junior Summer School Southampton is part of St Giles International, a family-owned English language school group founded in 1955 by Paul Lindsay and his wife Diana. St Giles junior summer courses offer 20 General English lessons per week. Each lesson lasts 50 minutes, for a total of 16.7 hours per week. The curriculum focuses on building communication skills and confidence in using English inside and outside the classroom.

Teaching Approach

St Giles teachers use a communicative approach to engage students and help them learn effectively. The school employs English language teachers who are committed to providing enjoyable and useful lessons. All teachers hold recognized qualifications such as Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL and have a university degree. Students leave the course with greater confidence, a wider range of vocabulary and functional language, and experience speaking to an audience.

Placement and Classes

Students self-certify their current level of English at enrollment. On the first morning of lessons, all students take a placement test. Depending on the number and levels of students that week, students are either divided into groups by level or taught in a mixed-ability class with different learning aims. Classes have a maximum of 12-15 students.

Theme of the Week

Each week, lessons and activities follow a theme, such as Food, Global Culture, or Science and the Environment. Students learn useful language and skills for an end-of-week project with students from a wide range of countries. They present their projects at the end of the week in formats such as films, presentations, drawings, and songs.

Workbooks and Graduation

During their stay, students create a workbook as a portfolio to share with family and friends. It records their achievements, targets reached, work based on excursions, and language learned. At the end of the course, students attend a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate showing their English level and length of stay, along with a full report from their teachers.

General English

The core program consists of 20 General English lessons per week. Each lesson lasts 50 minutes, for a total of 16.7 hours per week. The program is designed to build communication skills and confidence in using English inside and outside the classroom.

English Plus Language Options

In addition to the core English program, St Giles junior centers offer specialized English Plus options for five hours per week in the afternoons. Language options are available at most centers at no extra cost:

• University Studies Taster, which offers an introduction to life at a British university,
• Exam Skills, which covers skills needed for exams such as FCE, CAE, IELTS, and TOEFL,
• Performing Arts, which explores the language of drama, theater, and dance,

In a residence on the campus of the University of Solent, students of Southampton are offered a single accommodation in furnished, cozy rooms with private facilities. Access to the internal infrastructure (rest rooms, kitchens, etc.) is traditionally common for British boarding houses.

Extra-curricular program Junior summer is represented by creative, sports blocks. There is a student theater in the school, there are many clubs of interest. Attention sports fans are offered swimming, volleyball, football, bowling. The entertaining program is presented by film shows, theatrical shows, shopping excursions.

Cognitive rest is also rich and varied. The summer program for teenagers includes 2 full day excursions (in Brighton, Oxford, London, on the Isle of Wight), 2 for half a day (in Stonehenge, Bournemouth, The New Forest, Winchester).

The daily routine

The students of the summer school in Southampton are offered morning sessions. In the afternoon there is an entertaining sports program. In the evening students are waiting for karaoke, discos, theme parties, much more.

St Giles Junior Summer Southampton offers a summer program for teenagers in the port city of Southampton. Shops, cafes, and entertainment centers for children of all ages are within walking distance.

Students stay in single rooms with private bathrooms in a residence on the Solent University campus.

Students are supervised by adults around the clock. Staff live on site with students to support their safety and well-being. Teachers and activity staff accompany students on field trips, with staff-to-student ratios of 1:12 or 1:15. Regular roll calls take place throughout the day. Students and parents receive a 24-hour emergency phone number for immediate assistance when required. Students aged 13 and over may have free time at set times in groups of three with parental consent.

The summer school uses modern technology. Teachers provide individual attention to support students' progress in English.
