In most countries of the world, the end of grade 9 (depending on the country and program, it can be grade 10 or 11) is the first stage of secondary education. This is a mandatory minimum, after which families decide how the child will continue their education.

- Option 1 consists in completing the high school program and enrolling in high school for the Swiss Matura, A - level, IB, French Baccalaureate, Abitur and others. The received diploma gives the right to enroll in universities
- Option 2 involves admission to a professional college, after which the student can either start work or get a professional higher education. Admissions to universities with a professional college degree will be limited and may require additional certification. As a rule, this option is only open to local students and the admission of foreigners is not possible.
Enrollment of foreign students after the end of the 9th grade of a school is possible for upper secondary school programs.
