The university was founded in 1918 in the city of Smolensk, is one of the very first higher institutions that appeared during the USSR.

The learning process includes a course of lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory classes, educational and pre-diploma practice.

• In the field of computer science and applied mathematics: expanding the scope of computer mathematics systems; development of Internet services and applications for mobile systems;
• In the field of pedagogical and psychological sciences: the creation of new teaching methods and professional selection of highly qualified specialists; modeling and development of the psychological foundations of the interaction of personality and virtual reality;
• In the field of humanities and social sciences: analysis of the historical experience of the creation of regional universities, the study of the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the first half of the XX century; sociological monitoring of transformation processes, fixation and forecasting of the dynamics of various socio-cultural practices, sociolinguistic features of language and speech.

The educational process takes place on the basis of 4 educational buildings equipped with classrooms for lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory work. The classrooms are equipped with modern technology: projectors, screens, electronic whiteboards and computers. 

Smolensk State University provides students with free access to the educational and scientific library of the university, including the possibility of remote use of the library fund.

For sports, the university has a multifunctional sports complex and a sports hall, and a medical office works to monitor the health of students.

At Smolensk State University, the learning process is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after passing the students, they are given vacations (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).
