Ring of Kerry: all the landscape and historical treasures of the Iberian Peninsula

Southwest Ireland invites travelers to enjoy nature and immerse themselves in the history of the island. The County of Kerry, located on the Iveragh Peninsula, has created a driving tourist route by combining parts of popular routes - it is called the Ring of Kerry. By taking this route, hikers will visit the county's major historic sites and enjoy all the best views. Tourists ironically refer to the Kerry Ring as "40 Shades of Green."

The route begins in Killarney. Two streams of tourists leave from here in the morning: counterclockwise in tour buses and clockwise in cars, so as not to interfere with each other. The route is 179 km long: without stops it will take 3.5 hours, with sightseeing - 7-8 hours.

Views and corners of nature

  • Killarney National Park is the oldest and largest in Ireland: glacial lakes, relict forest with unique specimens of vegetation, 18-meter waterfall Torc. The highest Irish peak McGillicuddy is not strikingly high, but will delight fans of mountain walking.
  • The Ring of Kerry runs along the coast, and the views of the Atlantic Ocean, which constantly change depending on lighting, weather, and gusts of wind, are valuable in their own right.
  • Due to the open Ballinskelligs 2 rocky island, 12 km from the coast. The small island of Skellig is inhabited by seabird colonies, and Michael Skellig is striking with its picturesque rocky landscape and 6th century AD monastery.
  • The narrow mountain pass of Gap of Dunloe is a champion of ecotourism that draws the most enthusiastic spectators in Kerry County. Five lakes line the narrow road into the valley.
  • Moll's Gap offers magnificent views of the mountain range.
  • The active Macross Farm is modeled after the farms of the first half of the 20th century: you can see sheep being tended and see the well-coordinated work of shepherd dogs.

Historic Places.

  1. Six kilometers from Killarney, between 2 lakes in the national park area, is Macross House. It is a magnificent mid-19th century mansion, styled like a Tudor castle. In 1861 Queen Victoria of England stayed here for a few days. Macross House, one of Ireland's most famous museum complexes, is surrounded by a garden in which rhododendrons bloom in summer.
  2. Derrynane House is another mid-19th-century landmark, the home of a famous Irish politician.
  3. Macross Abbey, a 15th-century landmark, is located in Killarney National Park. The partially ruined abbey has retained its basic appearance. Tourists are attracted by the interesting design of the courtyard with a huge century-old tree in the center.
  4. Fort Steighe, a circular defense structure from the beginning of our era, is located 5 km from Sneem. The thick stone walls are stacked without the use of mortar - yet they are perfectly preserved.
  5. Ross Castle, a historic monument of the 15th century, was built for the Irish clan Ross. In the 17th century, in the war with England, it was the last to surrender to Cromwell's forces. Legends tell that the owner of the castle broke into the lake with his horse during the fortress and now lives in the castle at the bottom of the lake.
  6. St. Michael's Monastery on Skellig Michael can be reached by boat. The monastery is from the sixth century AD. It is located on a rock and is reached by a stone staircase, almost vertical. All the buildings are made of stone and have an unusual domed shape.
  7. Ballimallis castle was built in the early 16th century. The castle has not been restored: the outer walls, part of the fireplaces and chimneys, the architectural decor.
  8. Kerry Woolen Mills is an old woolen yarn factory. The mill is often referred to as a "mill" because it originally used the mechanical power of water to drive the machines. The mill partially preserved old technology and historic buildings.
  9. The Lace Museum at Kenmare Lace displays samples of the famous lace produced here in the 19th century.
