Named after Virginia statesman Richard Bland, Richard Bland College was founded in 1960 by the Virginia General Assembly as a subsidiary of William and Mary College and was once under its umbrella. This selective two-year college prepares students for admission to leading universities in Virginia and the United States. The college was named after the Virginia statesman and public rights advocate Richard Bland. The son and grandson of successful planters, he represented the area that now houses the college from 1742 until his death in 1776.
