The University of Lynchburg was founded as virginia's Christian College in 1903 by Dr. Josephus Hopwood, a pioneer of Christian co-education, and is one of the oldest co-educational institutions in Virginia. Lynchburg, an accredited homestay university, is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and with a tradition of welcoming people of all faiths and denominations.
Teachers at the University of Lynchburg are outstanding scholars and leaders in their disciplines. Of the 200 full-time teachers, 77% work on a full-time basis. The university has a long history of sportsmanship - more than 100 years, almost 200 titles at conferences and more than 240 all-American athletes.
The intercollegiate athletic program includes 25 teams (12 men's and 13 women's) in the NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Sports Conference (ODAC). The equestrian team participates in the Intercollegiate Association of Equestrian Exhibitions and the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (winning the title in 2022), in addition to ODAC.

The university offers on-campus accommodation in six dormitories for all undergraduate students, including summer school students. Each dormitory has:

- Living rooms with flat-screen cable TVs.
Each room has a bed, chest of drawers, desk, wardrobe and Ethernet port for each resident. The beds are bunk and attic.
Each dormitory is connected to a wireless network that can be used in private rooms and common areas. Cable outlets are also installed in some rooms, but students are responsible for providing their own cables and network cords.

The Intercollegiate Athletic Program provides men and women with the opportunity to participate in NCAA Division III and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competitions in 22 sports. Lynchberg won 204 conference titles and trained 249 All Americans. In 2014, the women's soccer team won the NCAA Division III Championship, the first national team championship in Lynchburg's history. Lynchburg students can practice a variety of club sports.

Facilities and equipment at University of Lynchburg
The university is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 180 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and 120 miles west of Richmond, the state capital. The beautifully landscaped campus, located on 264 acres, is considered a landmark, includes more than 40 buildings, many of which are built in the Georgian Revival style. The Graduate School of Medical Sciences building is within walking distance of the main campus and includes the Doctor of Physiotherapy and Master of Medicine PA programs.

- Claytor Center for the Study of Nature
The 470-acre nature reserve and educational center is located 24 miles west of the campus at the foot of the Otter Peaks. It includes a 7700-square-foot educational and research center, an eco-lodge for overnight stays for students, faculty, and visitors. The CNSC serves as a key location for field biology, environmental education, and research.
- Bielka Astronomical Observatory
The Belk Observatory, located on the grounds of the Kleitor Center for Nature Studies, has a 177-square-foot dome that houses the 20-inch (0.51-meter) Truss Ritchey-Chrétien telescope from RC Optical Systems. The Margaret G.L. Gilbert Telescope is used by the Department of Physics for astronomy courses, for research by students and teachers.
The observatory is pleased to show students the night sky with one of the newest instruments, the 13.1-inch Dobson StarGazer Telescope. This instrument with a large aperture and field of view offers stunning views of the night sky.
- Secondary telescopes
The observatory also contains six 8-inch Celestron CPC 800 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes for use in the pitched roof observatory and observation deck. These portable telescopes, ideal for observing the Moon and planets, for phenomena in deep space, are the main educational instruments of the observatory.
- Water Quality Center
Provides educational and project services in the field of watershed management, researches water quality in the reservoir, river ecology, environmental health, sustainability and stormwater management.

The Hebb Music Center is located on the lower level of the Snead Chapel. The various objects contained in Snidow Chapel and Hebb Music Center are:
