Early Learning School

  • Age: 1+.
  • Duration: up to 5 years, Stage 1–Stage 5.
  • Language: English.

Early Learning School accepts children from 1 year to 5 years of age and operates as the first stage of the general school pathway: after it, a child can move on to Preparatory School, and then to the College stage. Learning here is based on an approach inspired by the Reggio Emilia pedagogy: adults do not lead the child through a rigid script, but help them explore, ask questions, try materials, and express ideas through play, drawing, movement, speech, music, and themed activities.

This stage has five separate gardens, each supporting different stages of a child's development. Classrooms use natural materials, paints, crayons, and sensory areas; children explore color, shape, and texture through play and creativity. This format helps gradually develop independence, attention, imagination, and communication skills.

Teachers meet children directly in the classroom so that the transition into the school day is gentle and calm. When necessary, RHC involves specialists in occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physiotherapy; motor skills and social skills development programs are available. A short day or extended care until 15:00 or 17:30 can be chosen.

Preparatory School

  • Age: 6+.
  • Duration: 7 years, Grade 1–Grade 7.
  • Language: English.

Preparatory School admits children aged 6–13 and covers the path from Grade 1 to Grade 7. At this level, children develop academic skills, confident English, mathematical thinking, and an interest in science, arts, and sports. The curriculum includes Afrikaans, French, and Xhosa, and in Grades 5–7 additional elective subjects appear — music, Hebrew, French, and sports science.

Preparatory School operates in line with the IEB Primary Schools’ Initiative standards. Grade 3 and Grade 6 students undergo annual assessments of key skills so that teachers can track progress and adapt the academic workload. In mathematics lessons, special emphasis is placed on logic, problem-solving, and the development of critical thinking.

RHC uses the Google for Education ecosystem, and Grade 5–7 students work under the iPad programme: they prepare projects, presentations, and digital assignments, learn to search for and structure information, and develop independent work skills.

The Preparatory School infrastructure is divided into spaces for junior and senior classes. Junior Preparatory students have separate play and learning areas, open courtyards, and rooms for project work. Senior classes are located next to the sports fields and pavilion, and have access to STEAM classrooms, art studios, the Woolley Library, the Crawford-Kempster Square area, and an outdoor chess court.

College

  • Age: 13+.
  • Duration: 5 years, Grade 8–Grade 12.
  • Language: English.

This stage combines education from Grade 8 through Grade 12 and prepares students to receive the National Senior Certificate under the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) programme.

In Grade 8–9, students receive foundational preparation in English, Afrikaans, mathematics, natural and social sciences, economics and management, technology, arts, and Life Orientation. Electives are available, including sport, music, French, art, and dance.

Starting from Grade 10, students move to specialised study. The compulsory programme includes English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, and mathematics or mathematical literacy, while students additionally choose three more subjects from a broad list: accounting, business, computer applications, dramatic arts, dance, design, economics, French, geography, history, information technology, life sciences, music, physical sciences, and visual arts. Advanced programmes in mathematics, English, physics, German, marine sciences, and equestrian studies are available for particularly high-achieving students.

A key strength of the College is its work with IEB requirements in the senior grades. In Grade 10–12, classes are taught by teachers who are well acquainted with the requirements of the IEB examination system. Students regularly complete research projects, written assignments, practical tasks, and presentations — the final grade is made up of continuous assessment and examinations. Students work in science laboratories, IT classrooms, a library, and art and dance studios.

Reddam House Constantia — a private independent school in the southern part of Cape Town, in the Constantia Valley, for children from 1 year old to Grade 12, covering all stages — from kindergarten to the final year.

The school opened in 2000 and was the first in the Reddam House educational network in South Africa. The network's founder Graham Crawford developed Reddam House together with Sheena Crawford-Kempster, with the core ideas being student independence, strong academic preparation, sports, arts, and social responsibility.

Today, Reddam House is part of the Inspired group — an influential network of private schools operating on all five continents.  The school's motto — We Shall Give Back, «We Must Give Back», — is connected to the theme of contributing to the community.

Educational process

RHC follows the curriculum of the Independent Examinations Board of South Africa. Graduates take the National Senior Certificate through IEB. In 2025, 116 graduates of Reddam House Constantia completed their final exams with a 100% pass rate, earned 303 subject distinctions, 31 students finished the year with an A-level average, 50 — with a B, and 35 received four or more A's in subjects.

Senior school teachers work not only as educators, but also as examiners, moderators, markers, and academic consultants. In addition to preparing for final exams, the school helps students map out their further educational path and navigate their future career choices.

A key element of this preparation is the university and career counseling system in the senior grades: students receive guidance on subject selection, academic direction, and university application preparation. Through the Inspired network, the school also provides access to international counseling in partnership with Arete Education and The Classroom Door.

RHC actively develops career-related skills: leadership, public speaking, project work, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility. Through the Seed Capital, Interact, and Future Sparks programs, students take part in community initiatives, volunteering, and team projects.

Things to know about

  • The name Reddam is connected to a Latin word meaning «to give back». Hence the motto We Shall Give Back, which the school associates with responsibility to the community.
  • The Reddam House coat of arms was created in 1999 by Sheena Crawford-Kempster together with the state herald of the Bureau of Heraldry in Pretoria; the composition features a deer and a heraldic lily.
  • The Early Learning School is equipped with five gardens designed for different child development goals.
  • The Seed Capital programme: this is a student initiative through which pupils launch their own social and entrepreneurial projects. Students use this project for initiatives related to entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork, beach clean-ups, waste recycling, and resource collection for schools with fewer opportunities.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Reddam House Constantia is located in the southern part of Cape Town, in the prestigious green Constantia Valley — one of the calmest and most affluent areas of the city, at the very foot of Table Mountain. Directly opposite the school is Steenberg Estate — a well-known winery and golf complex with historic vineyards, restaurants, and green spaces. Nearby are the neighborhoods of Tokai, Bergvliet, and Lakeside, and slightly to the south the road begins toward the False Bay coast and the Muizenberg beaches. From the campus grounds, there are impressive views of the mountain slopes and the green valley. The city center can be reached in approximately 25–35 minutes depending on traffic, and Cape Town International Airport is approximately 30–40 minutes away by car.

Catering is provided through the school cafeteria on campus: students can purchase hot meals, snacks, and drinks, while parents can place orders and specify dietary requirements through an online system. For the Early Learning School, a separate plan is available through the Red Deli service.

The school offers the Adventure Zone after-school program with additional snacks and supervision after classes.
