Oxford International Digital Institute and Algoma University launch a joint course

Canadian Algoma University and Oxford International Digital Institute (OIDI) are launching the International Year One program. This is the first year of study, which students can complete online or at one of OIDI's international learning hubs, after which they can continue from the second year of an undergraduate program at Algoma University in Canada. The option is aimed primarily at students who want to receive a Canadian education but are not yet ready or able to relocate to Canada immediately. International Year One can be completed remotely or in person through the Global Hub OIDI network (which is present in eight countries). This model will make admission to a Canadian university more accessible and flexible, while maintaining academic standards and a clear pathway to full higher education.

The program will primarily focus on business and economics.

OIDI is part of Oxford International Education Group and specializes in online education, teaching in other countries, and international recruitment. In addition to higher education programs, it offers English language courses and the Oxford ELLT test.

What does this mean for the university?

Algoma University plans to attract more international students and strengthen its multinational character. Transnational education is currently gaining momentum rapidly, and Canadian universities want to adopt this model to stay in line with current trends. Universities are increasingly offering transnational education (TNE), where students begin their studies remotely and then transition to a foreign university campus (in their second or third year). This benefits everyone: universities can avoid the costs of building campuses and branches around the world, while students obtain maximum opportunities to study abroad. For Canada, whose immigration and visa policy (including with regard to student visas) is becoming increasingly strict, this could prove to be a very valuable approach.
