Open Universiteit

Open Universiteit Netherlands or Open University is a higher education institution that has been conducting research and academic work since 1984 in the Netherlands. The main buildings of the university are located in Heerlen.

Students in the Master Artificial Intelligence program choose their own pace. One credit represents 28 hours of study.

Most study support is provided through the online learning environment. Depending on the course, students may attend online meetings, optional group sessions at study centers, or nationwide study days. An advisor helps with planning and progress, while instructors answer questions about course content, assignments, and exams. Through mijnOU, students can register for courses and exams and view their study plan. The online environment also provides course materials, lectures, group sessions, ways to communicate with other students and instructors, and access to the online library.

Assessment may include a digital exam administered at a scheduled time, an assignment, or both. Exams can be taken on a computer at a study center or at home with online proctoring. Students may retake an exam twice during the twelve-month registration period.

Open Universiteit faculties develop their own five-year, discipline-specific research programs. Their research spans nine fields. Examples of these programs include:

Developing Curriculum for Deep Thinking: The Knowledge Revival was written by a team of education researchers, including Paul Kirschner, professor emeritus at Open Universiteit. The book was downloaded 40,000 times in its first three days.

A case study in the Aa van Weerijs basin found that restoring heathland and wetlands can increase both water retention and carbon storage. An integrated modeling framework also showed a direct link between greater soil water retention and increased carbon storage.

Open Universiteit keeps alumni connected through events, continuing education opportunities, and its alumni network. Alumni can also join the university's online panel to share their views on education, new initiatives, and the role alumni can play at the university.
