Northeastern was founded in 1867 in Blue Island, Illinois as a teacher's school, Cook County's first teacher-education institution. Northeastern Illinois University has a long tradition in education and prides itself on producing highly educated teachers and administrators. This tradition continues to this day, spreading to all academic disciplines of the university.

Over the years, the name, location and mission of the university have changed, but the commitment to teaching and learning has continued. The university has changed and grown, expanded to meet the specific urban needs. In 1978, the university opened the Chicago Teachers' Center, offering continuing education programs for city teachers and administrators. Since 1969, El Centro has been a hub for access to higher education opportunities for the Hispanic community. He owns a permanent new home in a 55,000-square-foot LEED certified modern building in the Avondale area of Chicago. El Centro offers comprehensive bachelor's degree courses and comprehensive academic support for students. He helps the local community through the Community Education Program in partnership with community organizations around Albany Park, Hermosa, Logan Square and Avondale.
