Kindergarten & Pre-Kindergarten

Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten education is a highly effective, practical and oral curriculum that is taught using a range of exciting and stimulating topics. The school encourages children to develop the following learning skills:

Much of this curriculum is taught by a core group of faculty and guest speakers under the guidance of classroom teachers. Boys receive special lessons in music, French and physical education taught by Merchant Taylors' Prep's specialist teachers.

Grades 1 & 2

  • Age – 5-7 years old,
  • The duration of study is 2 years.

The curriculum for grades 1 and 2 is taught by topic; It is possible to expand the topics studied so that they correspond to the interests of children and excite their imagination. The priority remains to lay a solid foundation and develop good learning skills. Most of the curriculum is taught by classroom teachers. Boys continue to attend music, French and physical education classes. Homework is set in Seesaw, a third-party digital learning app.

Grades 3 & 4

  • Age – 7-9 years old,
  • The duration of study is 2 years.

Pupils in grades 3 and 4 begin with a full curriculum of 14 subjects, which is characterized by depth, breadth and balance. English, math and philosophy for children are taught by classroom teachers, personal wellbeing and PSHEE, geography are studied. Every week, boys receive mandatory homework in English, mathematics and another additional subject.

Grades 5-8

  • Age – 9-13 years old,
  • The duration of study is 4 years.

Boys continue to follow a full curriculum taught exclusively by subject specialists. Some elements of the curriculum, such as philosophy for children and aspects of PSHEE, including citizenship, are taught in small groups.

Boys receive one academic homework assignment per day, which is installed in Microsoft Teams, part of the Office 365 suite, to which all students have access. Boys regularly participate in extracurricular enrichment activities, both inside and outside the school.

Since 2015, Merchant Taylors' School and prep School (MTP) has been part of the Merchant Taylors family of schools: the joining was with the aim of creating a "Through School" program for boys from 3 to 18 years old. There was a lot of interest in this initiative: the goal was to create a coherent educational program that would make the transition process from junior Classes in the older ones are much simpler and more comfortable for the child.

Until 2015, MTP was known as Northwood Prep, an institution with a rich and successful history that was founded by Francis Terry in 1910. In all subsequent developments, the school adhered to the original vision of Francis Terry. There is a Christian atmosphere of care, where each student is valued as an individual, where all participants in the learning process – students, teachers and administration – strive for excellence.

The main goal of MTP is to provide boys with all the necessary tools for a successful future, creating exceptional opportunities for their growth and development. Merchant Taylors' Prep offers a variety of meals for children of all ages, guaranteeing fresh and quality products. A children's lunch menu is available every day in the dining room, offering a variety of dishes ranging from salads to desserts. There is a salad bar where children can order at least 10 different dishes, the assortment changes every day, but there are always cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, beets, cabbage salad, celery, peppers, carrots, radishes, watercress, cheddar cheese, tuna, boiled eggs, potato salad, pasta salad, cold cuts, vegetable quiche and cottage cheese. Also included in the menu are fresh fruits, at least 5 different types are offered every day: oranges, apples, bananas, grapes, watermelon, honeymelon, strawberries, pears, pineapple, peaches, nectarines and plums. In addition, students are offered snacks every day: cheese and biscuits, bread and butter and homemade biscuits.

Activities Merchant Taylors' School and prep School

Merchant Taylors' Prep after-school program offers students the opportunity to expand their interests and skills in a variety of fields. Chess, choral arts, information technology, games, dance, and music are all available to students. MTP offers a wide range of after-school clubs and activities for students in grades one through eight: each student is expected to broaden their horizons and be able to contribute to the development of the field by attending their chosen class. Merchant Taylors' Prep After-School Program is a great opportunity for boys to develop and enjoy their passions.

The school is strong in music, with several students winning prestigious music scholarships at Merchant Taylors' School, Harrow School, John Lyon School, and Aldenham School.

Facilities and equipment at Merchant Taylors' School and prep School

Merchant Taylors' Prep is located at Moore Farm; a short road leads to it on the north side of Sandy Lodge Road. The school has a charming 15-acre campus with dedicated classrooms for initial education and main facilities housed in converted outbuildings listed as Grade II UK Heritage or in new buildings (prep and sports halls). MTP has its own 200-seat theatre, purpose-built and opened in 2008. A former professional theatre director who had previously worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company took over the management of the theatre programme.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Kindergarten (from 3 years old). The assessment of a child's abilities consists of three parts:

  • The child can follow the instructions of one of the teachers and responds to them,
  • Sociability
  • Development of oral speech.

Preparatory classes (from 4 years old). Basic requirements for the candidate:

  • Learning and communication skills,
  • Assessment of the child's current knowledge and potential in the form of a game.

Junior school (from 7 years old). Basic requirements for candidates:

  • Testing in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning,
  • Learnability and communication skills.
