Louisiana State University is the main institution of the Louisiana State University system. The university was founded in 1853 as the Military Academy and Educational Seminary of Louisiana. The current campus of the university was built in 1926 - a leading university with an extensive research base, offering students a high-level education, ample opportunities for intellectual and personal development. The mission of Louisiana State University is to preserve, disseminate and apply knowledge, and cultivate art.
Louisiana State University and the College of Agriculture and Mechanics came about through land grants from the US government in 1806, 1811, and 1827 for use as a teaching seminary. In 1853, the Louisiana General Assembly established the Louisiana State Educational Seminary near Pineville, Louisiana. The institution opened on January 2, 1860.
There are a variety of student housing options, from traditional dorms to residential colleges and apartments. Residential colleges offer the same amenities and functions as traditional dormitories: they maximize the life experience of first year students by creating small communities based on common specialties or interests, fostering closer interaction between students and teachers outside the classroom.

LSU does not currently offer scholarship programs specifically for international students. A freshman from other countries may qualify for a traditional scholarship if they are not a US citizen and attended a US high school or American school in another country. These students must submit an official ACT or SAT score to LSU.
