The University was founded in 1930 in Moscow under the name "Moscow Technical Institute of Fishing Industry and Economy". In 1957 it was transferred to Kaliningrad and only in 1994 received its current name. Now it is the largest higher educational institution in the fisheries industry in Russia.

The learning process includes a course of lectures and seminars, practical and laboratory classes, educational and pre-diploma practice.

• Design, development and maintenance of information security of automation and control systems for technological processes and production;
• Improving the efficiency of ship power plants and their components;

• Design, construction and vibration characteristics of fishing vessels.

The university provides three dormitories for nonresident full-time students, where a total of 1768 students can live. The cost of living per month is from 668 rubles.

For meals for students and staff, KSTU has a canteen and a cafeteria.

To involve students in social and scientific activities, KSTU organizes and takes part in the following events:

The education process is carried out in 4 buildings, equipped with classrooms for practical and lecture classes. Modern technologies are actively used in the classrooms: computers, projection screens, multimedia projectors, audio systems. 

Students are given free access to the educational and scientific library with a reading room for 300 seats.

For sports, the university has a sports complex with a gym, a swimming pool and a hall for wrestling and boxing.

At KSTU, the learning process is divided into two semesters: autumn and spring. At the end of each, an examination session is held, after passing the students, they are given vacations (in winter in January, in summer in July and August).
