How the Duolingo English Test works: a new standard for confirming the level of English

How the Duolingo English Test works: a new standard for confirming the level of English

An international certificate in English has long ceased to be a formality: universities, grant programs, and employers require clear proof of level. Classic, decades-proven exams, however, are not cheap, last several hours, and often require face-to-face examination. Against this background, the online format of Duolingo English Test looks like an unexpectedly simple solution: an hour of work at the computer and the result in two days! Understanding how this test works, how it differs from the TOEFL, and in which cases it really meets expectations is useful for everyone who is planning to study or career abroad.

How the Duolingo English Test works

The Duolingo English Test is entirely online and measures your English proficiency on a scale of 10 to 160 points. After passing, the system generates an official certificate that can be sent to the university or attached to the resume.

The test result is divided into four indicators:

  • Literacy reflects the ability to read and write,
  • Comprehension – understand written and spoken language,
  • Conversation — listen and talk,
  • Production — formulate thoughts in writing and orally.

This structure differs from the usual division into Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, so when submitting documents, it is worth clarifying in advance what a particular university requires.

The exam includes about ten types of tasks, and most of them test several skills at once: the participant is asked, for example, to write down a phrase they heard, choose real words among fictional ones, describe a photo, and write a short essay. This format assesses not only text comprehension, but also vocabulary, grammar, and reaction speed.

The key feature of the test is adaptability. The algorithm changes the complexity of the tasks right during the exam: if the participant answers confidently, the system complicates the questions, if he makes mistakes, it offers simpler options. As a result, the test adjusts to the real level of language proficiency, and does not just record the number of correct answers.

The entire exam takes about an hour, but the pace remains high, with only 30-60 seconds for individual tasks and about 20 minutes for a written answer. Such dynamics test how quickly a person thinks in English, which is critical for studying and working in an international environment.

To pass, you need a computer with a camera, stable Internet and a separate quiet room. The system asks to show the room through a webcam, prohibits the use of headphones, and requires you to put your phone away. The control is strict: any switching of windows or extraneous noise can lead to the cancellation of the attempt.

How is Duolingo different from TOEFL?

Comparison with the TOEFL is inevitable, since this exam is considered by many to be the basic international standard.

  • First of all, the format differs: TOEFL more often requires a face-to-face or long online session and takes about 4-5 hours, while Duolingo fits into about an hour.
  • Cost: Duolingo is noticeably cheaper.
  • In terms of structure, tasks in Duolingo look more dynamic and shorter. If in TOEFL a participant reads voluminous academic texts and completes complex tasks to analyze them, then Duolingo offers a series of short exercises that resemble language quizzes. This format reduces fatigue, but requires a quick reaction and steady concentration.
  • The difficulty is caused by the comparison of points. There is no universal official table for transferring to the TOEFL scale, so when submitting documents, you need to check the requirements of a particular university. Many universities already publish the minimum passing score of Duolingo on their websites, and this is what you should focus on.

How to prepare for the exam

1. It is reasonable to start preparing by registering on the official platform and taking a free trial test — it will help you understand the structure of the tasks and get used to the interface. After the first attempt, it will become clear which skills need attention: vocabulary, listening, or writing.

2. The next step is to work on weaknesses. If the task of recognizing real words causes difficulties, it is worth systematically expanding the vocabulary and repeating the frequency words of academic English. If the most difficult thing is to describe the images, it is useful to regularly practice to formulate oral mini-monologues based on the pictures and gradually reduce the time to prepare an answer.

Since there are few specialized textbooks, many are prepared with the help of online materials and open studying tasks. Remember that regular short workouts are more effective than occasional intense workouts! The preparation period depends on the initial level, it can take from one week to several months (we always advise you to lay at least six months for plus or minus a good result).

Special attention should be paid to organizational details: during the exam, it is necessary to check the camera and microphone, prepare a passport, warn the family about the ban on entering the room, remove unnecessary items from the table. Strict adherence to the rules eliminates the risk of retaking.

When the test is justified

Duolingo English Test is designed for those who:

  • Submits documents to a university that officially accepts this certificate,
  • Is limited in time and needs quick results,
  • Want to reduce the cost of confirming the language level,
  • It is easier to cope with short, dynamic tasks than with many hours of academic sessions.
