Hitotsubashi University was founded in 1875 as Japan's first business school with the mission of educating the "captains" of the entrepreneurship and economics industry. Over the years, the scope of research and teaching methods has expanded to encompass all aspects of the social sciences. In 2019, Hitotsubashi University received accreditation as a leading national university as the only socio-scientific university. Today, this educational institution is famous for its well-deserved reputation as one of the leading research centers in Japan.

The university has 4 faculties, 6 areas of postgraduate study and one institute:

Accommodation, meals, prices

Accommodation is provided to local and international students in several residences.

Residence Hall Kunitachi – 63 single rooms and about 10 rooms for couples. Cost of accommodation per month with rent, WiFi, monthly membership and cleaning:

  • Single room in a common apartment - 45 200¥. It has a bed, workplace, air conditioning, telephone, toilet room, refrigerator.
  • Single location in the apartment – 48 800¥. The room is equipped with sleeping and working places, a small kitchen and a bathroom. For use provided refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioning, telephone.
  • Placement of a couple – 92 900¥. In addition to sleeping and working places in the apartment there is a kitchen, bathroom, guest room. All residential areas have the necessary household appliances.
  • Family accommodation – 109 200¥. Sleeping and working areas, living room, kitchen and bathroom, children's room.

Utilities are not included in the payment. The cleaning fee (monthly 10 000-30 000¥ depending on the room) also covers possible damage to the property.

Residence Hall Keimeikan and Residence Hall Chuwaryo accept undergraduate and postgraduate students. The priority for settlement is foreigners who arrived under exchange programs. Accommodation is supposed to be in single rooms and in shared barrier-free apartments. The cost of living is from 50 000 to 60 000¥ per month.

Residence Hall Ikkyo-Ryo is the second major dormitory for university students in Tokyo. Accommodation options and cost per month:

  • Single room in a shared apartment – 40 900¥.
  • Placement of a couple – 86 900¥.
  • Family accommodation – 114 900¥.

The furniture and the number of rooms in each variant are similar to the hostel in Kunitachi.

Activities Hitotsubashi University

A large number of activities are organized for students during the academic year:

  • Admission ceremonies and welcome parties
  • Kodaira Festival is a thematic event fully thought out by freshmen
  • Ikkyosai – events with snacks, musical performances and martial arts exhibitions
  • Graduation ceremonies.

Facilities and equipment at Hitotsubashi University

The University is located in several territories:

  • Kodaira Kokusai – international campus with dormitory, sports facilities, library
  • Kunitachi – main educational and research activities
  • Chiyoda is located in the center of Tokyo, it hosts classes of the Higher Schools of Business Administration and Law.

In the territories there are:

  • Several libraries with more than 2 million books in total
  • Lecture buildings, research centers
  • Student Health Center
  • Dormitories, guest houses
  • Computer clubs – about 100 computers are available for extracurricular use
  • Sports facilities: halls, fields for team games, swimming pools, etc.

Admission dates and extra charges

The academic year consists of a number of main activities:

  • Entrance tests and events: March 27-April 7
  • Spring Quarter: April 9-June 3
  • Summer quarter: June 3-July 25
  • Summer holidays: July 23-28, August 3-September 15
  • Autumn quarter: September 16-November 5
  • Winter Quarter: November 6-March 19
  • Winter holidays: December 21-January 5.

Education dates may vary depending on the chosen program.

Additional expenses for admission and education:

  • Entrance exam – 17 000¥ (bachelor's degree), 30 000¥ (postgraduate and law students), 9 800¥ (research students)
  • The entrance fee is 282 000¥ (bachelors and postgraduates), 84 600 ¥ (research students).

Monthly students spend on accommodation, meals, mobile and Internet communications, recreation and sports - in total, about 89,000 ¥can bereleased.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

To enter the university, you will need to perform several state procedures:

  • Registration of a foreign resident – a foreign passport, two photos and a completed application for registration at the city hall
  • State health insurance – application to the mayor's office and registration at the local hospital
  • Opening a bank account to pay for tuition and scholarships.

Reception is held in June and November. At the university, when enrolling, the applicant will have several entrance exams, including a language exam. The student must have:

  • Certificate of language proficiency (English or Japanese – TOEFL/IELTS, JLPT/EJU)
  • Successfully passed entrance tests (certificates, certificates)
  • Paid registration fee (receipt, bank statement).

Scholarships Hitotsubashi University

Financial support is provided by both the university and the Government of Japan. Options:

  • Payments to newly arrived exchange students, fellows of international organizations, research students
  • MEXT State Scholarship for Postgraduate Students
